No point of going to the grocery stores specially "warehouses like" when you can get fresh, tasty apples off the trees while having family/friends fun. Go Farmers!!.
Been going to Stribling for 20+ years. It is still family run but it has gotten more commercial than it used to with the banning of pets and tree climbing, the slightly less friendly than they used to be staff, and the growing weekend crowds. We still go for the baked goods and jams but we go across I-66 to Hartand now for picking as they allow dogs, have pick your own pumpkins and berries, and the people just seem nicer. Nothing really wrong with Stribling (hence the four stars) but it is not as great as it used to be.
This orchard is huge! It's size is beneficial because even on a packed weekend you can easily find your own row of trees to explore. We've been picking here for over 30 years. The staff is friendly and helpful. They bake their own breads and pastries and have a cute store for jellies and jams. There is honestly nothing but picking though. If you're looking for something other than that you'll need to go somewhere else. There is no entrance fee - you just pay for what you pick. :)
Visited Stribling Orchard 2-weekends ago for 'Apple Sampling'. The staff was very helpful and friendly; no hassel to pick and weigh. Seemed like hundreds of Apple Trees filled with thousands of apples (peak season September/early October?). Trees are a little taller than other Orchards (helped provide shade to apple pickers), so staff provided hook-n-claw tools to pull down the choicest apples even from tall locations. Apples were delicious in so many varieties. We ate so many apples while sampling and picking. Our daughter loved running between the rows and from tree-to-tree trying the apples. This was a first-grade weekend entertainment location.
