Located in McDowell, Virginia, the site of Stonewall Jackson's first victory in the Shenandoah Valley during the Civil War, the Highland County Museum serves as the McDowell Civil War Orientation Center. The Museum is located in The Mansion House, the 1851 Greek Revival home of George Washington Hull, a farmer, merchant and colonel in the Confederate militia. The home, which served as a field hospital for soldiers wounded during the Battle of McDowell, is now undergoing a complete restoration by the Highland Historical Society. The museum has a small theater and an excellent 20-minute film with commentary and re-enactments of actions during the Battle of McDowell. The Museum has a permanent exhibit, 'Uniquely Highland', that documents the history of Highland County, two changing exhibits, a research library and gift shop. Nestled in the Allegheny Mountains, the village of McDowell itself is truly a step back in time and appears much as it did 150 years ago.
