Just AMAZING! And well worth the rental car from DC and the drive time. If you love nature, you can't miss this! The colors were very pretty. We went on a horseback riding tour, drove through the forest and up to the Shenandoah skyline drive. What a day!!! If we go back, I am spending the entire weekend here.
We only went through this forest, but it is worth to stop. Big old trees, little creeks and falls near the road. And it is for free - just stop for awhile and enjoy.
We go camping here a couple of times every year - about a 4-5 hour trip from our home in Southern Maryland. It's breathtaking and very relaxing and it's free!! We are always surprised that not many people take advantage of our National Forests. Hey, you pay taxes on just about everything these days - why not get something back for your buck? Plenty of shady spots close to streams. Plenty of hiking and Harrisonburg, Va & Franklin, W. VA are not that far away if you want movies or restaurants. GREAT FREE VACATION SPOT!!!
This very large national forest is beautiful! Many trails to choose from ( including one for ATV's) We had a great hike on the Duncan's Knob Trail. At the top is a very large rock scramble that the kids really enjoyed. View at the top was gorgeous and there was lots of room up there to rest and explore before heading back down. Be careful to mind where you started the scramble, it can be a little tricky getting back on the trail when you are ready to head home. To the top of this trail and back (allowing for rest/getting a *little* lost) took four hours in all.Great way to spend a Saturday. One last tip, horses use these trails too, so watch your step!
Breathtaking scenery, a true American treasure. The roads and hiking trail are wonderful. Well worth the trip.
What else is there to say? Plenty of outdoor recreation for all interests!
Cascade Falls Recreation Area is in the Jefferson National Forest. The trail is well maintained and easy to follow, but several miles round trip. there are rest room facilities @ beginning of trail. There is fishing, a pool @ the base of the falls for swimming and cooling off after your trek. It's a lovely, wooded trail to the falls. You round a big rock...and all of a sudden, see the falls. Well worth the hike. Take a picnic lunch to enjoy before you tackle the trip back.
