The wines served here are made from fruits other than grapes and mead. This was an interesting experience. I would definitely recommend this to those who want to try something new.
I would have ever thought there would be so many fruit varietals available for turning into wine, but it was so delicious!! Loved the peach, blackberry (though it's VERY sweet), and the jalapeño Dragon's Breath!
I have visited Hill Top many times over the past year. It was such a pleasant surprise when we found this jewel of a place while trying to avoid the snooty crowd at some other local vineyards. We always feel very welcomed at Hill Top. The environment is very relaxing, the tasting room folks are super knowledgeable and friendly, and their wines and meade is delicious!! I like all their wines and meades, but their Lavender wine is a special treat for spring and summer, and their Hunters Moon is great for fall! Stop by their tasting room, sample their wines and meades, and if you buy a bottle your tasting fee is waived. And honestly, you should always leave Hill Top with a bottle. If you don't stop by Hill Top Berry Farm and Winery you're missing out!
The best view at any winery. And the most unique wines and meads. We walked away with 6 bottles that we can't wait to share! This is a DON'T MISS visit for any wine enthusiast.
Visited Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery with my girlfriend and had a great experience sampling some truly unique wines and meads. This winery is different in that they focus on wine made from various fruits and berries, not grape wine with a flavor additive. They also offer several types of meads which were a wonderful change from your usual wine tastings as well. Some of the wines were surprising in that they were on the drier side and not sweet as might be expected. If you are in the area this is worth a stop.
We visited every stop on the Nelson 151 and then some. Don't have time to write 50 words about each one!
First winery visit for us. Nice wine tasting experience. Lots to choose from. Loved the fruit wines. Will return.
I am the person you spoke to when you were here. When you arrived in our tasting room someone came to get me because you were upset about finding out that our restroom was not available because of our festival. You told me it was a bad first impression to have to use a porta- john. My impression was you had not been to the porta- john and didn't like it as the only option. I was never rude but I did say if you wanted to leave the festival, I would return your money. The money paid was only $10 and there was a list of things that the admission fee covered. We had live music so that you could stay and have a good time. The admission fees are how we pay the bands so even if a person was not drinking, they could visit vendors and listen to music. We normally charge $4 for a wine tasting and we sell our glasses. Since this was the date of our annual festival, the admission, in addition to live music, covered the tasting fee and each person got a logo glass to keep. If you travel to wineries to do tastings, then you know many charge a tasting fee of more than we were even charging to get into an event. The use of porta- johns is a once a year thing and I have them delivered for this event. I tried to explain to you that they are clean and that the reason we have to have them for our event is because we are in the country and a well and septic tank can not handle all the additional people that a festival brings in. You declined my offer of reimbursement and decided to do your tasting of 8 wines paired with food, instead. I apologize greatly if there was no paper in the restrooms. That would upset me, too. I will point out that your conversation with me was before you ever went out there so you had already decided you were unhappy with us but not enough so to get a refund and leave. All I can say is we will monitor the porta-johns more closely next year to make sure we don't run out of supplies. That was just an accident caused by being really busy with a lot of people. This event is very successful every year and doubled in size for this year. We have been doing this event for almost 20 years. Some people come back year after year and we have come to expect to see them. We received so many compliments on this year's festival and yours was the single complaint which we tried to deal with in person, then on our Facebook page with your post and now on Trip Advisor. We are very proud to be a business that Trip Advisor has endorsed as a 2014 recommended business. I know that a business can not please everybody but if you look at our business reviews, you will see that we are doing a really good job of making people happy with our product and services. I happen to use Trip Advisor in my travels and I think most people will see that our great reviews out number this one. Because of the above explanation, I will not change anything on our admissions policy for the festival next year. I absolutely will make sure the bathrooms are monitored more closely to make sure they are well stocked.Thank you,Kimberly Allen PughOwnerHill Top Berry Farm and Winery
This is a wonderful winery. The person doing the wine tasting shared some of the background of the winery. It is the only winery that does NOT use grapes. All their wines are made from fruits. Unfortunately, the two types we were interested in tasting/purchasing, they were out of. This should tell you how good their product is.
Great stop on our way through Nelson County. Lots of unique wines to sample. Service was great, very welcoming and friendly. An enjoyable and fun experience!
We stopped recently while going on the 151 tour. Enjoyed the selection of so many different fruit and flower wines. Very interesting and so different. All of the wines we tasted had a nice flavor. The staff could have been a bit friendlier though.
We stopped by while doing the Nelson 151 wine trail for a sampling of their wines and ended up walking away with a bottle. They have a huge collection of fruit wines, all but 2 are made from their own, local fruits! They had some great flavors, but you have to enjoy off-dry to sweet wines to appreciate them. Good for sipping, definitely not a replacement for a nice Chardonnay though. They also had some great meads! We appreciated the service we got, being the only ones there, he spent a lot of time explaining the winery and their practices to us.The location is BEAUTIFUL! Their vines are grown in a beautiful pasture which is well-manicured! They have a really pretty setting to sit and sip as well.Definitely worth a stop while you're in the area!
Tried several of the wines - partial to the meads and sweet fruit wines. Sat out on the deck and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings while sipping the tasty wine. I could do this every Saturday afternoon!
We are not ashamed to say we love fruit wines. It is a large part of our socialization with our neighbors to sit on the porch sharing a glass of sipping wine and friendship. To this end fruit wines are perfect. Hill Too has nopretension, does not charge for tasting and seem like honest hard working people. We didn't have a bad wine and in fact are going back tomorrow for Dragon's Breathe. Given four stars as people who think the only wine is dry wine will not like this place. For the rest of us it's wonderful
Wine without grapes is definitely worth the visit. Their wines are smooth and delicious. Stop to taste the mead. Yes, you remember Beowulf don't you? Definitely worth the stop and taste.
