We thought the price to enter was a bit extreme. Yikes. It was a neat place to see though. Only reason for not giving it more than 3 stars is because of the amount of money per person.
We had a good time. It's not cheap, but we really loved the Navy exhibit on the second deck. Also very interesting exhibit of the history of maritime (not just navy) presence in Hampton Roads.
interesting Centre. Allow lots of time to read. Included was a choice of film. When we went the eating facility was closed. Luckily there was an open event on the grassed area next door with great food choices. There are some interactive parts. The children ( or adults) can pick up items from the "seabed" using the controls from an underwater submersible. ( not actually being underwater).
It was nice but maybe my expectations were a little too high. The ship is good to see as it brings a lot of history, but for some reason it kind of left me wanting more. Maybe I was unconsciously comparing it to the Missouri. I think kids would love to explore it. There are some tanks inside with some fish, eels, sea horses, etc which are always nice to see. There are also some other great pieces of history and some great models. It's a good outing and it's downtown so there are other things nearby.
Really had fun watching the 3D movie, and taking a tour of the USS Wisconsin....what a huge ship...Great time with my boyfriend, he reminisced about his Navy days as we toured the different areas of the ship. Fun for all ages!!
This center is great, it gives you so much information about where out Navy has been and where it is going. It is great. Museum buffs would love this.
Visited 12-30-14. Nice, but a little pricey at a cost of nearly $16 to enter. That does include access to USS Wisconsin exterior decks and two lower decks. For full tours the cost was $30 or more. On the plus, lots of attractions including naval history and environmental exhibits. Big gift shop. USS Wisconsin is nice and the docents on the ship are knowledgeable.
This museum is a must for families w kids ages 6 and up. There is so much to see 3 to 4 h should be allotted. The exhibit showing submarine life circa 1960’s is riveting and affecting. Then, there is a marine life exhibit w a shark tank and marine wildlife exhibit. There is a v informative/interactive knot tying area as well as a surfing/tsunami video w Kelly Slater featured. Also amazing. Finally, the recently (1990’s) decommissioned sub offers access that is mind boggling. Grand in scale and tiny at the same time. We struggle to find activities experiential and cerebral enough for all family members to enjoy and this one was a hit.
Best part was rambling around the Wisconsin, which fired the first rounds of the "Shock and Awe" attack at the beginning of the Gulf War. Don't miss the 7 min movie on the way into the ship.
The Wisconsin battleship is part of this museum, so admission to the museum is admission to the ship and visa versa. Spent most all our time on the ship so we didn't get to see much of the museum, but there was plenty to see. We'd like to come back with our kids.
The Museum has many exhibits beyond the USS Wisconsin. The facility is geared toward ocean going ships, the Navy and other issues in the Tidewater area as a whole. There is a focus on the Navy but the shipping culture of the Norfolk/Hampton Roads areas is at hand. This is a must for visitors to the area.
We enjoy visiting Nauticus. The museum is very well done and gives you a chance to learn much about naval history. What we really enjoy the most is touring the the Ship, the Battleship Wisconsin. It really allows you to take a step back in time and get a feel for life on the ship back when it was in use. They have several veterans on the ship who are there to answer questions as well. We have been with our kids when they were little and teens. This trip was with my parents who enjoyed the visit very much. It's great for the whole family. If you've never been you should go and experience this piece of history.
Really really informative...and the chance to GET ON a Destroyer was kinda life altering...from our sheltered little life.
Some of the displays were not functional but for the most part this is a great place to take older kids. I would recommend giving yourself at least 5 hours to walk through this museum.
We arrived on a Sunday, the web said they open at 10 am however it is noon on Sundays. Right away we were greeted by staff, everyone we encountered was friendly and helpful. I can't say enough about Nauticus. There is so much to see and do, especially for kids. Very much a hands on and educational attraction. For adults, many artifacts and information and this is all BEFORE you even get to board the ship! The USS Wisconsin was exciting to see and peruse. We opted to take the self guided tour because with small children we wanted to go at their pace and not hold anyone up. It was really neat to see how the sailors lived and where they worked. Awesome day we will always remember! We visited in December, so right next door is Charles Dickens Christmas Towne. Well worth checking out. We saw a skit from period actors, made Christmas cards and ornaments, had fresh popcorn, talked to Father Christmas and so much more.
