The variety of the art is outstanding for a city this size. It is a great place to spend a few hours! You cannot go wrong with a trip to the Chrysler Museum!
I had not done my homework and I really did not know what to expect at my visit to the Chrysler Museum of Art. I was blown away and actually had to stop and save more for another visit. What is really interesting about this museum is that it is so well curated and it is clear that the exhibitions that I saw had a plan and a vision - it wasn't just about the stars of art history, it was more about seeing and learning about art and artists. So no you do not go here to see 10 great Rembrandt's or Van Gogh's. It is not that kind of museum - you DO go here to see many period artists - perhaps not as famous but amazingly talented and important in their own right and to see their work in context. So to me this museum is really about context and not about glamour artists - and to do that you need a collector and collection that had a vision which was about a deeper appreciation of art and its history. This is an excellent museum and a must see.
This is the place to visit if you have an hour or six hours to fill your eyes and mind with Art. Free and easy to walk through. You can get close to some of the most wonderful art ever created. It spans the whole of human existence. This is a place you just can't hope to cover in just one day. I look forward to returning soon. The parking lots fills up quickly so plan on parking a couple of blocks away, unless you get there early.
Their glass studio is superb. I have taken several classes at the CMoA and the staff is friendly, and they have fun doing what they love. Nice to place to "make" memories.
My daughter and I stopped into the glass blowing shop for something to do one day. We were mesmerized watching them in action. At Christmastime we took a glass blowing class and made two ornaments each. It was such a great experience and we had hand made ornaments to give as gifts and one as a keepsake to admire each Christmas. There is no charge to watch the glass blowers, but if you want to take a class and make something there is a cost.
Children 7 and older enjoy the glass demo. Age 4 lose interest after and hour. Adults enjoy the entire show.
The improvements in the galleries were well worth the wait. The museum's extraordinary glass collection is now displayed in a manner befitting it's importance. There is now a nicer flow throughout. If you haven't visited yet, you must add this to your wishlist.
This museum is part of downtown Norfolk. The glass blowing exhibit and demonstration is amazing. Not to be missed. The main museum is a collection of art from around the world and throughout the ages.
For a city the size of Norfolk, this collection is world class. The building itself is beautiful, and don't miss the glass and the 19th century French collection!
Have visited this museum many times pre-and post-renovation in 2014. The glass collection, which is exceptional is now very nicely displayed. The glass studio which holds daily demonstrations is very informative and well worth the trip across the street. The museum itself is nicely balanced between painting and sculpture. There is no admission cost so makes it easy to visit multiple times to really see everything. the staff is gracious and enthusiastic. Also, the restaurant, albeit pricey, has very good food.
We got to the museum with just an hour or so before closing so we had to book!My main interest is late 19th and early 20th century art .. so we headed right to those salons. They have some nice examples of painting from Europe (Picasso, Braque, etc). They also have a nice assortment of marble statues (American).Although I can respect the older pieces they own, they were not my favorites. If you like art at all, you will not be wasting your time here (as I have done at other museums before).
Love to wander through the exhibits. Especially the Egyptian Relics and the Far eastern displays. Fun gift shop!
This a great museum. It is famous for its collection of glass. However, I would also recommend the paintings which range from medieval to modern. What is really nice is that the curators have included explanations of the major trends in art for each period. This is really great if you have children with you.
I have lived within an hour of Norfolk over the last 12 years, and despite many forays into the city, I had never visited the CMA before, despite the good things I had heard about it from friends. I finally took the plunge this past weekend, and I greatly doubt that the Hampton Roads area has a finer site to visit than the museum. It is a beautiful space in an of itself, and the artwork contained within represents just about every genre, style and period of art that you can think of. There are no Michelangelos in the place, but what you see, all carefully and thoughtfully laid out in the many rooms throughout the museum, are very interesting, representative pieces of artists from the US and abroad. Some are household names, and others, to the more uninitiated like myself, aren't immediately recognizable, but even amongst that latter group, there were some very fine pieces that made the visit there very enjoyable. As an added bonus, the restaurant on the first floor is very good, about as good as any in the Norfolk area that you might want to visit for lunch. Entry to the museum is free, but as good as the venue is, I did not mind making a contribution before I left.
The museum is great but what we love if the glass studio. There is always something going on. Watching glass being blown right before your eyes is spectacular. Not only is it free it's kid friendly.
