We had a great time in Norton VA we just were passing thrrew to go to Roanoke. I have been to Norton Many times. So I have don't all the In town attractions. we decided to go see a movie at the central drive in about 5 miles north almost to Appalachia VA. The Drive in was great and you could listen to the movie in your car on the radio ! Great food and movie it only was 5 bucks a ticket and you got historic tickets from the Whitesburg Cinema in Whitesburg Ky.
I have been to the Central Drive-In many times and its always been a great experience. I remember going there as a teenager and I was happy to be able to share it with my daughters and I hope to take my grandson when he gets older
Wonderful step back in time ! Great for the whole family . Take a cooler , blankets and chairs. They do have a great snack bar. My family loves it. Worth the drive.
Central Drive-in is one of the best family movie experiences in the region. Their purchase of a digital projector has improved the experience 100 percent. The food in the concession stand has a reputation for excellence as well.
I was in the area for work and saw this place when I was driving back to my hotel in nearby Big Stone Gap. Perhaps I'm just a naive city gal, but the opportunity to go to a drive in movie was too good to pass up! And what a place! It is like stepping back in time -- a time where you just sit in (or on) your car or pull out a couple of lawn chairs, eat a corn dog and experience the movies in the fresh open air! It's nestled in a little valley so you have the mountains, plus the movie screen to enjoy and a really amazing little snack booth. It was a real experience and I'd advise anyone to check it out. The owner/ticket lady said they were likely having to shut the place down due to financial issues and I really hope they don't. It would be a shame to lose an American classic like this.
I had only recently heard of Central Drive-In, and seeing that it is only an hour drive, my husband, three children and I decided to go. Neither the kids nor my husband had ever been to a drive-in, so this was an exciting bucket-list to do. Realize when you are driving to the theatre NOT to rely on GPS. It will take you in the middle of a swampy field. After we circled around said swampy area a few times, we finally asked for directions and were pointed to just keep driving a few more miles. The theatre is a restored drive-in that has a decent arcade and yummy grill. We were also very happy with the admission--$6 adults, $3 kids--and that covers admission for the entire evening! The parking aisles are set at an incline, which aids in viewing. The atmosphere was light and happy before the show began, with people talking to one another or going to the grill (which has spectacular fatty food!!!) for their burgers, popcorn, or soft drinks. The sound is broadcast both through loudspeaker (which I wish was better) and through a radio frequency. The biggest negative was the restroom. It definitely needs updating and needs checked throughout the evening for soap and paper (both of which were gone very early). All in all, this was a near-perfect evening. For less than $30, this family of 5 watched two cinema movies and enjoyed snacks, all while checking off an item on the bucket list. We'll definitely be back.
Its definitely worth a trip back in time to visit this drive-in. You get at least two and sometimes even three movies for the price of 1 matinee! The food they serve is very good...burgers, fries, corn dogs, and nachos along with the standard movie theater faire. The place could use some updating, but it has been operating for quite awhile and is most definitely worth a visit.
