This is an amazing example of life in the early to mid 19th century. Perfect place for a Visitors Center, close to the original buildings =this is the real thing not a reproduction like other 'historic towns'. The staff here are very helpful.Would be nice if the upper section of building was open too.
Since the movie, "Lincoln" was released (much of which was filmed in historic Old Towne), we've been meaning to make the thirty minute drive from Richmond to Petersburg. We decided to start at the Farmer's Bank, which serves as the Visitor's Center. The staff embraced us with traditional Southern hospitality, graciously giving us an informative guided tour of the building and assisting us in planning our tour. We decided to take a package tour of three sites of interest. The staff was very helpful in explaining the timing of the tours so we wouldn't miss anything! We left feeling excited and confident that we would get the most of our visit, and we did!
The representative here was very, very helpful Many movies are made in Petersburg including the recent 'Lincoln.' While we were there Tom Hanks was in town to produce a new film.
I see there hasn`t been a review in nearly a year. Just say the tourist office people who occupy the bank are just as helpful as mentioned previously. The brief tour of the bank that failed nearly 150 years ago (too heavily invested in Confederate debt instruments) was interesting and informative, and is perhaps a lesson to bankers today.
This old bank building is fascinating in its own right. However it is also invaluable as part of a visit to Petersburg because it is the local visitor center. The lady we met there was incredibly helpful and following her advice we had an excellent visit to the city. She also showed us round the old building, the street right outside is where some scenes from 'Lincoln' were filmed!
What a neat place, it is preserved just as it was way back in the day. Gotta love the preservation of these historic buildings. They have old artifacts inside as well and encourage a tour. The young lady that was working there was very helpful.
Visit here first they have good knowledge of the town and can advise on what to do and see and have maps and brochures. There is the old bank safe whcih was lowered into the vault floor and old money to view.
We went to the visitor's center expecting to buy a combination ticket for 3 attractions. In addition, we were treated to a very nice tour of the building by a very pleasant and helpful employee. The builidng is a former bank so you must not miss what they did to secure a 400 pound safe every night. Ok - I will tell you ...they had 2 men hoist it into a hole in the floor into the basement. Good place to go for information, maps etc.
