like many other reviewers, I'd never heard of lightships until Portsmouth. It was a quiet day, so I received a personal tour showing me round the ship. $4 for entry to this and the naval museum. I'd start there first as it has some info about the ship's origins. I'd highly recommend a visit.
We did get to take some pictures of the outside but it was closed to tour. We saw some of the info on lightships at Shipyard Museum. We were disappointed it was closed to tour.
What a treat - I love lighthouses but was unfamiliar with lightships. Had a personal tour of the lightship and was fortunate to have a wonderful tour guide who imparted very interesting details about that lightship and others. Took a self-guided tour as well - amazing and very informative.Very inexpensive and enlightening (no pun intended) Easy access at the harbor.
Interesting self guided tour. Was worth the $2. Very well kept restrooms and clean and maintained equipment. The video on lightships was very informative. The lighthouse ship was not open so we only got to see the inside of the building.
I did not know anything about lightships until I walked into the Lightship PORTSMOUTH Museum. There was a knowledgeable tour guide inside who provided me with interesting information about lightships and then allowed me to walk around inside the ship on my own. It was nice to see the living quarters of various crew members. I was also able to look up the hollow mast and imagine what it must have been like for the crew member who had to haul up gallons of kerosene during inclement weather. For the $4 entrance fee I paid to see the Lightship PORTSMOUTH Museum, I was also able to get into the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum at the end of the block. The Lightship PORTSMOUTH Museum is located between the Renaissance Marriott and Admirals Lodging condos(?). Definitely worth a visit if you're in the Portsmouth Olde Town area.
