There is no question that the only place to see a movie in Hampton Roads is at the Commodore in Portsmouth. The sound system is phenomenal the food is excellent and they take great pride in giving an excellent movie going experience without children yelling or people talking and texting. Our favorite food are the fries with cheese and sour cream on them and the nacho platter is excellent. Make sure you save room for dessert for the hot brownie sundae or the cinnamon loaf with raisins and icing.
well, maybe the second best only because The Naro is closer to home. But the Commodore is great - exceptional screen & sound system. comfortable chairs. the food is good, not great but perfectly fine for a movie theater. and the beer is cold! and good popcorn.
This theater is beautifully decorated and reminds me of a classic movie. The seating is plush and comfortable, there are lamps on the table, and murals on the walls. You can order simple food and drinks before the show and relax and enjoy the company of the people you are with before the show starts. We will definitely come back when we are in the area again.
The Commodore Theater is a restored theater and a great way to watch a movie. The atmosphere is perfect for "date night" with the spouse. I say spouse as I don't believe a movie is a good date with someone new (you need to converse and a movie isn't the place!). A lamp and telephone are on the table (telephone for placing order). They serve beer and wine as well as food. The food isn't very good, just a step above fast food. Tip: you can purchase your tickets earlier in the day to guarantee your seat (you get to pick). Tip 2: Get there early and enjoy a drink and conversation with your date.
My husband and I enjoy watching movies at home. One of the enjoyments of watching a movie at home is comfortable seating and you can eat and drink while being entertained. Occasionally a movie comes along that we want to see in the theatre. The Commodore offers all the key things of what we enjoy. Their food selection is fun and delicious. Their staff is efficient and courteous. Their chairs are quite comfortable. and they offer state of the art movie viewingnfornquality of sound and picture.
The Commodore Theater is located on High Street in charming Olde Towne Portsmouth. Olde Towne is a lovely area with plenty to do and see. The Commodore is no multi-plex or Cinema Drafthouse. Yea! It is a beautifully restored theater with lovely murals and chandeliers. Admission is well priced. If dining, there is comfortable seating downstairs where light meals and beverages can be ordered, including wine and beer. There is seating in the balcony for those that are not dining. The screen is large and the sound is good. Food and drinks are ordered and served prior to the start of the movie. There is a good variety of items on the menu. Everything that we have ever ordered on our many visits has been tasty. It is always a special treat for us to visit the Commodore Theater.
There are two choices. You can sit in the balcony and purchase traditional movie snacks or you sit at a table and order snacks/meals prepared in the kitchen. The food is good. The seats at the tables are very comfortable and you don't have to worry about someone kicking your seat during the movie as you would at a traditional theatre. The balcony seats are traditional type seating but any time I have sat in the balcony there was plenty of room. You can get a good view and good sound wherever you choose to sit. This is my favorite place to catch a movie.
Visiting this grand old theater in downtown Portsmouth is like stepping back in time to an era of wonder and elegance. From the sidewalk marquee to the magnificent murals, this theater is classic. It evokes a sense of the grandeur that was back in the early days of cinema, when movies were 'moving pictures,' the show started with the opening of a curtain, and moviegoiers were awe-struck by Technicolor images on the giant screen. The Commodore Theater, for me, echoes with the thrills and charms of Hollywood in the days of larger-than-life epics, bold westerns, newsreels, and all the old classic pictures we still love. It is a remnant of a time when the events on the screen were larger than life and shaped the way we understood who we were. The movies on the screen are today's new releases, but this place is a relic of a simple, majestic time gone by.
THis is a movie theather where you can have dinner before the show. The movies that are playing are current. The food was reasonably priced and the chairs were comfortable..
They get good films. The old theatre is lovely. It is great to be able to watch movies in the comfort of an arm chair with a drink in your hand. The food is extremely basic and I really cannot recommend it but don't let that ruin your overall evening experience. It is possible to watch a movie without eating too.
Beautifully restored historic theater - first run movies on a fantastic screen and the sound system will move you! Love the phone on the table to place your dinner order. Our very favorite theater for dinner and a movie!
The Commodore is hands down the best place to see a movie in the Tidewater area. The food is good, the facility is a true historic gem, and the screen and sound are first rate.
First run movies with a light menu. Be there at 3pm to make your reservation and select a good table. Then come back around 6pm for the movie. Choose a table on the top level for best viewing and ease of moving around.
Everyone has a friend who is hard to surprise. While cruising the Web for a "quirky" activity, we came across the Commodore Theater and there was no doubt what we were going to do to surprise her! When we pulled up in front of the theater, her eyes lit up and the birthday surprise began for all of us. The Commodore Theater is an absolute gem. From the old projection equipment on display when you first walk in, to the unique experience of being able to enjoy a movie in the most comfortable seats, having ordered from a phone on your table this is an experience you must absolutely try. The renovated theater has beautiful murals on the walls and the feel of being in an old time theater. Even the bathrooms had that old-time feel. The menu is extensive but I have to say that the popcorn (made fresh with real butter if you choose) is the best movie popcorn I have ever had. Because of other circumstances, we went to a matinee instead of an evening show - but if you are going for a night out, you can bring your own bottle of wine to complement your meal (or order from the menu). We enjoyed seeing "Jersey Boys" at the Commodore on the day that we went and all had a wonderful day. If we are ever in the Portsmouth area again, this is a stop we will definitely make.
This nostalgic movie theater in the historic district of downtown Portsmouth Virginia is a great site for a movie date night. You feel like you've been taken back in time in this dinner theater style movie house. Love the fact that you can order a light fare dinner right from your table with an old fashion telephone. They offer an extensive variety of appetizers, sandwiches, drinks and of course popcorn. We didn't leave hungry. An overall wonderful date night with friends. We'll be back for another show soon!
