Leesylvania State Park is a somewhat obscure park in Woodbridge that has a little history along hiking trails, fishing and boating....but perhaps the biggest draw is that it is situated along an impressively expansive body of water...the confluence of two rivers that stretch out for over a mile it seems. There is a cliff overlooking the water with a very picturesque view, and even a little miniature sandy beach.
I love to go barbecue here it's by the water, there's lots of trees for shade, you can put out the Hamock.
Bring the kids. A chance to learn and hike to and stand on history. Really nice picknic and play grounds. Fairly safe for bicycling and walking, share the road. Lots of hiking trails, not much off road for bikes. All, types of boating, I don't recommend swimming, people do. I used to ride in year round on my on my bicycle all the time, no charge.
Our family has been here numerous times for Cub Scout day camp, family picnics, fun in the sun in the sand by the Potomac, geocaching, camping, canoeing, and hiking. VSPs are usually a great place to visit at a great price and this park is no exception.
When is the water going to be safe to eat the fish?No where to rent boats. Cost is high to get in.Lots of out of town-ers. You can never find a table or place to sit. To many people. Trashy around the water and table areas. This place is a mess. Close to home and cannot use it because of the crowds.
The park has a nice beach area for you to picnic and play. I also use it to walk the trails. The area is so beautiful. During the summer the weekends are often extremely quiet, so go during the week or early weekend mornings.
Leesylvania State Park offers a beautiful outdoor experience for hikers, paddlers, boaters, sailors, campers, history buffs, and picnickers. It is big enough to offer a sense of wilderness, offers a great playground and turtle pond for the kids, and has plenty of shoreline for scenic views. The restrooms at back of the park store are usually well kept, and park staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. Check the bulletin board for activities for the whole family.
It is sorta small but considering it is located right here in Woodbridge you would expect that... We go there to hike and watch the boats! It is clean with picnic areas and space to fish from the bank. Has plenty of parking and a d cent boat launch and landing area. I buy the State Park and National park pass each year and we go often!
Leelsylvania State Park isn't huge, but it is big enough to have a whole range of attractions. A boat ramp, hiking trails, nature center, fishing areas, and a pier are just some of the things here. If you're looking for a quick getaway from the crowded parts of the suburbs, this is easy to access and has plenty to do. Sitting on the banks of the Potomac the views are great. A railroad trestle crosses over a corner of the park for train enthusiasts, multiple trails varying from very easy to moderate are available. The ones on the river side of the railroad tracks are sometimes crowded, but the ones on the entrance side are much less frequently used. There are a number of geocaches located inside the park if you're interested in that. As another reviewer mentioned it can sometimes get a little crowded, but usually not unpleasantly so. On occasion there will be some type of event going on that will cause it to be more crowded than usual, so check their web site before you go.
For having such a long coastline along the Potomac, Prince William County for years had little access to the River. Leesylvania goes a long way now in making that up. When we've visited, it's been fairly uncrowded, which is nice in increasingly crowded NOVA. Lots of picnic tables and walking trails are the attractions for us. Also, this is an historic site from Colonial times and the Civil War (Confederate batteries were based here to blockade river traffic to Washington).
We enjoyed Leesylvania State Park as we were visiting the area and it was nice to take a break to walk around. We noticed it was very crowded by the river and there were a lot of families around one area. We walked along the river and got to enjoy a bit of nature.
We love to take our dog for a swim at this park. The water and beach are clean. Picnic tables are in the shade and the breeze is lovely. We also like to go in the winter and sit by the fire. If you like to walk there is a trail that goes through the wood, lots of history too.
Not sure it's really a hideaway, but it's not obviously known. It stretches along the river. What we like is that there are very many grills and picnic tables in the trees, well spaced, well cleaned up, trash cans all around, and all are near-ish the river. There's a modest playground for the kids, a fishing pier, some pavilions to mount a larger picnic, boat launching with large parking lot (we don't use it), and some short, not difficult hikes up into the surrounding hills or along the river. It's just our family's sort of go-to place for a picnic in all seasons. Quite pleasant and, when crowded, not horrible. I think the fee is $5. In the winter, the collection booth is not manned, so honor system. Couple of decent bathrooms, a park service HQ with some local and nature stuff in it (rocks, stuffed animals of the region, etc.).
This state park is located on the Potomac River. The scenery there is wonderful. There are hiking trails and especially "Fit Hiking Trail" that you can stop at various points on the trail and follow the directions for stretching, and other exercise activities along the trail. You can put in your own watercraft or rent one. This place is well maintained and fishing along the river with benches to rest on. I will visit this state park again. You will find something to do for the entire family.
Accidentally stumbled across this gem when I went exploring last week. Was so surprised to find such a beautiful location 10 minutes from my home. There is a visitor center, store, picnic area, amphitheater, boat launch and lots of hiking trails. I look forward to coming back and doing some of the hikes. There are a few historical areas too although I didn't get out to them on my initial visit. I did the hike along the river and it was just peaceful and beautiful.
