I live just over the hill from Dixie Caverns and Pottery. The cavern tour has not changed much in the 30+ years since I first went. There are steps - lots of them - and the temps inside are in the 60s (Fahrenheit). The tour guides are usually very knowledgeable. Wear practical shoes! The 'and Pottery' is a bit of a misnomer now. The pottery shop closed several years ago, replaced with a room full of vintage and eclectic collectibles (be sure to say hello to the cat!). On the other side of the building is a kitsch utopia - t-shirts, figurines, wind chimes, toys and more. In the middle is a small room with rocks and fossils. The whole building seems pleasantly stuck in the late 1970s. The bathrooms are not wheelchair accessible. There is a nice campground just past the store. It stays fairly busy year round.
My husband and I found the caves beautiful and interestinf to explore. The facilities are old school and very low key. The tour guide did a good job although some of the stories and jokes were a bit hokey.
Folklore says that the small brown bats returned early. This means early winter , but they are very small and sleep alot , The tour takes 45 minutes ,you cover about 400 steps up into the mountain.yes up not down . Tour guide was very nice and knew all the cave facts and lore. There is a picnic area ,camping site and gift shop. I enjoyed the tour ,cave features and the small group of interesting people with the tour .Good day trip with family, Can't wait to try another cave trip.
I am a local in this area and have been to Dixie Caverns many times with friends and family. It really is a cool place to visit...Literally, because its about 65-68 degrees at all times. During the summer the tours are larger and more brisk, but in the off season its less busy. The tours are informative and the scenes inside are great! Even if caves aren't your thing, you should still check it out!!
A pleasant family experience. The guide was good and overall it was a nice cave with interesting features.
Liked everything about the tour. Nice area, and also had a nice picnic area..camping avaible as well.
The tour cost $12 per person takes about 45 minutes and includes about 450 stairs. Try off season visits. I went on a September Monday and got a private tour.
The sights inside the caverns are spectacular, and to enhance the sights the guides (our guide was a really fun gentleman named Preston) keep stories going and even make several jokes during the tour. Dixie Caverns is 100% family friendly and fun for all ages. There is not enough space here to complement Preston (the guide) - the sights alone were awesome, but he made the entire experience triple awesome!!!
This is a great trip for a hot summer day when the temperature has you stuck with nothing else to do outside but want to get out of the house. The pathways are clearly marked and the location has a "antique" mall on part of the property. Nice location to visit.
Four of us went to visit the cavern - it was the first time there for 3 of us. Had a great time and our tour guide,Tyler, had lots of anecdotes. Don't let the idea of 362 steps scare you. I am totally out of shape and I did fine.
This is was the first I'd ever been to any caverns, and it was actually a really fun tour. The only thing was that the woman at the cash register was not friendly at all. We politely asked how long the tour usually takes and she told us to read the sign on the wall (which we hadn't seen). It's a decent price for about a 45-50 min tour. The guide was actually a really nice guy that told a lot of interesting facts and jokes along the way. We didn't have a huge group which made the tour even better because the other groups that came in later seemed a lot bigger and didn't have as much space to stand around the guide. The caverns are really pretty as well. Don't forget to bring comfortable shoes that have good grip. There are several sets of stairs in the caverns and they are a bit slippery because of all the humidity.
This little gem is off the beaten path. I did not have high expectations, since I had heard it was more of a family run business and not like the big Luray Cavers just north of here. The price was right, and I found a $3.00 off one adult admission inside a travel brochure at my hotel. The cavern is huge, with lots to see inside. Our travel guide was excellent, and pointed everything out to us, and did not move too quickly. It was nice and cool on a hot summer day, but we did bring jackets and used them. The gift shop has lots of gemstones and unusual items. My 11 year old loved it. It was her first cave. There are a lot of stairs, and no wheelchair access. Be prepared for a light workout. It takes about an hour to see inside the cave, and the tours go about every 20 minutes.
We had a great time at this cavern. The tour guide " Bo" was one of the best ! They also have a very nice gift shop.
Went on a tour of the Caverns with my Girlfriend and her family while we were on vacation and It was a great experience with very interesting history and our tour guide Preston was a very kind and excellent guide I totally recommend him this Is a must If your vacationing the Roanoke/Salem area.
We have been to many caves over the last few years having 2 boys (now ages 13 and 11). This cave was pretty small, the formations have a lot of damage as well. Many are broken off. Our tour guide was a young teenage girl and didn't have her facts straight. Gave wrong facts several times and was just overall not a very good guide. Cave did have gold in it on the ceilings which was a first that we have seen. Also, most of the cave was above ground level, which was also pretty unique. The "wedding bell" was the most interesting feature.
