The church was further out than we expected but was well worth the trip. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the church and the surrounding area. The church itself is very simple but has stunning stained glass windows that were a later addition. Be sure to get a look at everything including the antique organ, antique folding table next to the solid oak baptismal font and the grounds. Make sure you check out the gift shop for some lovely unique gifts.
We happened to be in Smithfield for a wedding and decided to visit the Historic St. Luke's Church. To our dismay the church was closed in January and it was January 30. We were met in the parking lot by a local Pastor that helped run the historic site and explained we came from Michigan and did not know that they were closed in January. He was gracious enough to give use a tour and history lesson of the church. Just let me say it was amazing and if we are ever in the area again we will defiantly visit the church again.
SilverAnnie,I apologize for your unsuccessful visit, but it is our policy to close the church to the public during rehearsals and weddings. We try our best to inform the public of any upcoming special event closures through the Smithfield Visitor Center and our website, but unfortunately the system is not perfect. Please contact me directly the next time you come through and I’ll ensure a trouble-free visit. All the best,Collin NormanAssistant Director
Our daughter was married here and the setting couldn't be more beautiful. (There is a fee for weddings, funerals, etc.) The staff is extremely helpful and accommodating. The history is inspiring. If you are having a small wedding and would like a quaint, intimate atmosphere, this is the place for you. A friend sang during the wedding ceremony and the acoustics are incredible! Romantic, personal, historic, peaceful, lovely. The site also has a lovely gift shop.
Besides being able to view the inside of a very old church the highlight was the information provided by John our tour guide. He had information on the building, restoration and even who was buried under the floor. Or should I say what parts of the body was buried under the floor. He painted in words a very complete picture of being a member of the congregation, especially how long the sermons would run. It seems that back then if you traveled 5, 10 or 15 miles to church then you wanted your moneys worth.
$3 tour, take it! We had a historian who also was a minister as our tour guide and it was a good stop. We all remembered different facts as we were in the car home but it is a neat and different piece of American history that should not be missed. About 1 hour from Williamsburg but ride the ferry across the James rover and drive to Smithfield, VA for the day. It is worth it, not to mention that gas prices are CHEAP!
We had a wonderful go back in history tour by a wonderful guide John. It was amazing to hear and see all about something so old and treasured. And still standing in a city. A must visit if in town.
Visit the grounds and surrounding cemetery. The church is being restored and it's inside is beautiful and historic.
Very pleasant place to see and learn. Staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. Must visit. Young and old will enjoy. Organ was awesome. Anyone with musical interests should stop and see.
Awesome old church. So old that is has a castle siege door for an entrance! It's worth visiting here just to see the oldest pipe organ in the US! Super economical and extremely interesting.
The church had lots of history. The guide was was knowledgeable on the history of the church. It was nice to walk around the grounds.
We too were lucky enough to have Mrs. LaBonne give us our tour of this quite lovely small 1632 church. She is very knowledgeable and articulate and is willing to answer any questions one might have. A visit here will give one a rich history lesson featuring the Anglican Church, the English and the early settlement days in Virginia. $5 per person. While in Smithfield, be sure to also visit the Isle of Wight Museum, Bacon's Castle, and enjoy a meal at the historic Smithfield Inn where George Washington is said to have stayed.
The historic ST Lukes is really a gem of the greater Smithfield / Isle of Wight area. The beautiful chapel with its Gothic architecture and the surrounding cemetery were truly beautiful.
This authentic gothic church has everything but real Goths. This Anglican church continues to inspire awe after 400 years. For comparison see historic Bruton Parish church in Colonial Williamsburg.
This is a must see for anyone interested in the beginnings of our country. Volunteer Gloria La Boone was the most amazing and knowledgable tour guide we have ever encountered! Kudos to her! She was also our guide at Chippokes Plantation and was just full of interesting information. She is a great asset to your area!
