A girlfriend invited me to attend a free concert at Ox-Eye Tasting Room as we enjoyed a glass of wine together one Saturday afternoon. We had a lovely time. The musicians were upstairs which meant they didn't interfere with the wine tastings going on in the main room. Both areas held several people comfortably. There were several tastings going on, but we had no trouble securing our glasses of wine quickly.
Went on a relatively busy day for a tasting and there were several groups at the bar. There was only one woman behind the bar, completely overwhelmed and after 15 minutes without as much as eye contact, didn't acknowledge us and we left. Probably good on a quiet day, but they should have additional staff.
What a great find in adorable Staunton! The owner was pouring and gave us large wine samples, plenty of information about each pour and pleasant conversation. I ended up buying a fantastic red. The tasting room was hopping on a Saturday afternoon, but I never felt rushed or crowded. Highly recommended!
We stopped at this wine tasting shop in downtown Staunton and near lots of other neat places to visit, eat, shop not expecting much but we both like wine. The tasting room was empty except the the bar tender who was friendly and knew enough to make for a great conversation while we checked out the Ox-Eye wines. The wines were a fine variety of whites, reds and a sweet wine and the tasting was $5. Well worth it for the wine, the relaxed atmosphere and the respite from other sites.
Ox-Eye's actual vineyard is located seven miles from Staunton, so it makes sense to bring the tasting room closer to the visitor traffic. As a side note, Staunton is a neat town that his very pedestrian-friendly. A number of shops and restaurants are located within a two-block area. Back to Ox-Eye. Tastings run $5, or $7 if you want to taste the full array (I recommend the latter). The tasting room is quaint, and the staff very friendly and knowledgeable. We were quite honestly underwhelmed by the first three white wines, but they produce a Riesling that us smoother than any we have ever had -- quite unique. On the red side, they produce a Lemberger, which grows particularly well in their terroir, and which we have never seen at another Virginia winery. The Cab Franc is also nice. If your wandering around downtown Staunton, it's worth the two block walk.
We have visited Ox-Eye several times, the fact that we keep going back should be a clue. While parking is a challenge, it is available on the street or a lot a short walk away. The building was originally some type of scale house for freight in another era. The staff at the tasting room is always pleasant. The wines may be limited but they have shown my wife and I there are dry wines for our sweet wine palette. If you enjoy visiting the many wineries VA has to offer this is one you should try.
This tasting room is always a delight. Friendly staff and very informative about their products. Wine overall is excellent. This was the second time to the Ox-Eye. And, again we bought 6 bottles,
On Saturday after lunch we walked to the tasting room near the train depot. The building was redone and it was a lovely place to taste some wine. Our server was great and very knowledgeable. Bought a bottle of blush to take home.
We looked forward to visiting the winery, but we were disappointed. We had trouble finding the place because we were expecting to go to the vineyard, not just a tasting room. We also didn't expect to pay $5 to taste 7 wines. The wines we tasted were all right but not great. Why is there a blush between the dry white and dry reds?
We were so very pleased to come upon this quaint wine tasting offering. A pleasant way to spend an afternoon while strolling through town. We had the opportunity to sample multiple wines, all of which were pleasing to the palate. Great information and conversation added to the day. Wines and miscellaneous items are also available for sale. Would recommend.
My husband and I went with another couple for a tasting. It was busy when we arrived on a Saturday night. We went upstairs to look around. Downstairs, we were guided to comfy chairs. The owner seemed very knowledgeable and humble. We tried seven wines for a reasonable price. We liked the whites better than the reds. We bought the Chardonnay and the white dessert wine as they fit our palate. We will definitely be back when in town.
We enjoyed our visit at The Ox Eye tasting room. The room is bright and open. Works by local artists are on display. The staff is friendly and very knowledgeable. The wines are delicious.
We stopped by for a tasting recently and were pleased with both the selection as well as the knowledge of the owners. We absolutely love the "Shy Ox" blush.Go, you won't be dissapointed.
Virginia wines are doing well. From the poor Cab Franc from years ago, the reds are credible and the whites hold their own against CA and NY wines. Like so many small wineries, Ox-Eye has a very small vineyard, but in their tasting room in the downtown area of Staunton (very near the glass works and railway station), they share some of their hard work. The owners are hands-on, we met the wife serving wine in the tasting room. The room in this old warehouse building is bright and cheerful, pleasantly decorated. There is plenty of parking.Wine tasting is SO subjective that I won't use this review to put my preferences forward, but we did buy wine, which is unusual for us in a small winery. We are red wine drinkers, but actually enjoyed their dry Reisling a great deal. This is a wonderful diversion in this historic town. The only drawback is that they do not ship their wines, yet.
We were referred to this place by an acquaintance and we are forever grateful! The woman working there was so friendly and helpful. She even told us about the other wine shops in Staunton. We tasted some of the wines, and ended up buying a case of our favorite. You can sit on the first floor in big leather chairs, sit upstairs, or sit outside. We had beautiful weather so we sat outside and enjoyed a couple of glasses of wine. Nice atmosphere!
