Wonderful diorama about local civil war events. Fossils for sale along with books and a great guided tour of the resident cave. There is also a walking interpretive trail of civil war information.
When the Cedar Creek Foundation Building was closed on the Monday I was visiting, I went to Hupp Hill Visitor's Center. A charming lady helped me and directed me to the Hi Neighbor Diner for lunch. She was great. Got the souvenirs and off I went
There is a nice museum in this park which is located directly above Crystal Cavern. There is also a trail that shows battle entrenchments and lunettes from the civil war battle. An opening to a natural cave and several sinkholes characteristic of the area can also be seen on the trail.
Happened by Hupps Civil War Park on our way to Srasburg. They have a small but wonderful museum. A very nice mural covers one wall with battle scenes and local views of the area. The room is filled with artifacts from the local area. The staff was very helpful and friendly in spite of being very busy getting ready for a descendents reception for families of soldiers from both sides who fought at Cedar Creek. We walked the interprative trail along the breastworks, sinkholes and got to see the entrances of two caves.
My husband and I visited here on a Sunday afternoon. The museum offers a very informative 45 min. movie on the history of the Civil War battle here. Watching this movie laid the perfect groundwork for visiting a historic plantation up the road. The museum also has an impressive collection of Civil War artifacts for viewing. The gift shop has a good collection of books on the local history. Outside the museum is a lovely walking trail through the woods where you can retrace the steps of the Civil War soldiers. This site is worth a visit - but don't expect Gettysburg - this is smaller but still just as important.
It's not a national park battlefield facility, but a heck of an interesting place from different historical times with a focus on the Civil War actions all around it. Entrenchments, cannon emplacements, interpretation signs and walking trail put you right onto a landmark of the Cedar Creek battlefield. Two very nice staff ladies full of information and referrals. By terrain map, artifacts, writings, replicas, relationships and artwork, local history and the battles are shared with visitors. This place has some room for more. Crystal Caverns history is on display as well. Nicely done for a small place.
We were looking for a place to tour a battlefield on our way south and found this on our I- phone. We decided to pull in and see what it was all about. The lady in the visitor center was very welcoming and helpful. I wonder if she wasn't bored and was just looking for someone to converse with, this is the middle of the summer and probably the most popular time to visit. Like other small battlefields there really isn't much to this place. We decided not to do the museum in the back of the visitors center because we had been to other small museums like this one on our tour of the Shenandoah area. So why plunk down another fee? We did purchase some postcards to help them out. We walked the small hike on the premises in the rain with umbrellas open, again not much to see if you are used to larger national battlefields but a nice little walk. Unless you are on your way by, I really cannot recommend going out of your way to see this. All the same I truly appreciate what these towns and people are doing by preserving these areas for future generations. We saw a lot of this type of place on our week long look at the area.
I dropped in by chance and enjoyed the little detour. It's a pretty little place with a very helpful and informative lady at the visitor center. Plenty of free literature. Unfortunately the museum wasn't open due to maintenance work but was opening again very soon. I did the 1/2 mile loop walk and enjoyed it. Nice to find somewhere not overrun with crowds.
We're sorry your viist to Hupp's Hill was less than satisfactory. Although our site is small, we feel we have a lot to offer our guests. The Stonewall Jackson Museum is no longer in operation. However, we have a new museum that opend in May, 2011 on the Civil War Battle of Cedar Creek fought nearby. This is the ONLY museum dedicated to the story of the largest battle in the Shenandoah Valley, and features numerous archaeological artifacts and a 45 minute film on the battle in our theatre.Outside, our grounds have a 1/2 mile loop nature/ history trail that highlights remains of Civil War fortifications, fantasic views of the surrounding landscape, and the unique geology of the region. We also have picnic facilities for those who want to take a break from traveling. Finally, the gateway to Shenandoah Visitor Center is your source for information on visiting Shenandoah County, the Shenandoah valley, and the state of Virginia. We hope you'll come back to Strasburg again We're continuing to expand the activities at Hupp's Hill!
