It's not the ocean but it's a nice place to lay in the sand for a tan! Nice place just to relax and look out at the water and see the boat action.
Free beach in Yorktown and on the York River. Beautiful place to just relax, swim and fish. Locals are marvelous and there are many quaint motels/hotels nearby and on the opposite side of the York River bridge (in Gloucester Point) there is free parking, snack bar, free beach, fishing pier... great area.
Beautiful cozy area with pristine white sand beaches close to many places to eat , drink and have Ice cream. Walked the boardwalk with a light breeze coming from the river. It is usually not crowded. Walked out on the little pier to see what fishermen were catching. Some croaker fish.
I live locally and frequent this area. It is a nice get away and I have never had a problem down here. There is a police presence and the people have always behaved. Many families visit and the shops and food selection is great.
Not only is there a clean, white sandy beach, but also a big green, grassy park. Bring your packed lunch and a reclining chair because you will want to spend the day. Also, there are unique shops to browse, great food joints and even an hagaan glaus or however you spell it lol! All in walking distance!
It was a brisk day but the walk along the water was wonderful. We took a lot of pictures. Parking was easy but I can assure you it is a challenge in the warmer months.
Don't come here and if you do, please don't tell anybody else about it. We live nearby and want it all to ourselves!
Yorktown Beach is an interesting place to visit. I like to go to take pictures, especially sunrise shots. There is always something interesting going on. The beach is small and can be very crowded during the summer. Also, beware of the jellyfish. They usually say stay out of the water after the Fourth of July as the jellys are worse then, however, I have been there earlier and still have seen them. Just be cautious and be prepared with vinegar or meat tenderizer.
Small area for beach; lots of seaweeds in the water; clean area; has different events on weekends; a few restaurants; historical.
Yorktown Beach also know as Yorktown River Walk is a quaint little place with small shops, a maritime museum, restaurants' and a nice walking path along the river. We also took the free 20 minute bus ride around this area. this is our second time visiting this area.
You know what? I LOVE Yorktown; all four of us who visited did. But, to call their waterfront a beach is a bit humorous. Yorktown is a tiny colonial town along the York River. There is a stretch of sand along the shore of the river in front of about 2 blocks of restaurants and shops that they call Yorktown Beach. It's a beautiful little area of town; a very nice place to stop and sit for a while with a nice glass of sweet tea or an ice cream cone, but it is hard to imagine loading up the car with beach chairs and sand toys along with the kids to put out an umbrella, watch the river and play in the water! Call it something else, Sandy Waterfront Park or something. DO go to Yorktown, though. Just don't expect there to be a real beach there.
Unless you like to shop or lay on the beach this is a place to skip on your history tour. We went there thinking we would see a few historical buildings. The history of the battle that ended the Revolutionary War is worth making a visit, right? Wrong...The highway took us to Water Street which is chock full of tourist shops in newer buildings built with a historical twist. Most of the town was destroyed by fire in the 1800's so unless you like to see reproduction this is probably not the best place to visit. We read the signs placed along the waterfront walk, however other than this the history of the town itself is pretty buried. The one positive thing is that the parking garages are free.
The Yorktown beach is a nice place for small children but might be quite boring for older children/teens.
Beautiful water, we walked and walked and enjoyed the view and the pier. The beach was clean and this time of year uncrowded. We had beautiful weather
Had lunch then spent the day at the beach the water was nice and warm no waves so you could just relax and enjoy the water. No waves to fight. Lovely view of Coleman bridge and the tall ships docked there. Lovely day
