So after getting off the freeway and getting lost trying to find food to pick up, having drivers behind me riding my tail for driving to slow, I turned in to the first turn I saw. I was tired and done driving and I see a sign that says food. My bf and I parked and went up. We were sent to an entrance to the side of the gift shop. We went in and entered the buffet line. I honestly expected it to be ok food. We are picky eaters but they had some basics we would try. The fried chicken and mashed potatoes were amazing. Green beans were good. Baked chicken and biscuits were great. Brown gravy was so so but I'm a southern girl and prefer homemade cream gravy to brown. The tavern inside was quaint and we sat in the back room near a window. It was nice to look out a little show on the ground. Our waitress was super nice and helpful. Had I known the price first I would not have eaten here and I would have skipped it over, however after eating here we will be recommending it and coming back next time we are up In Virginia .
I went to Michie Tavern many years ago with a school group and we had a very good time touring the buildings and having lunch at the tavern. I remember the the gift store was awesome ! Seeing the photos posted brought back great memories ! Would love to go back again soon !
A historic building with a lot of charm. Wait staff in period costumes. I went with a large group for dinner. The food was surprisingly good. Much better than it was a decade ago when I was last here.
Since Michie Tavern is advertised so much as a historical building, we decided to try it for lunch after visiting a few wineries. To our surprise, it was a buffet. The food featured includes southern fried chicken, hickory smoked pulled pork barbecue, and marinated baked chicken with side dishes including potatoes, beans, cornbread, etc. The adult buffet is $17.50 plus drinks. My husband found the fried chicken to be a bit salty. I didn't notice the salt. All in all the meal was OK, but for the amount of food we generally eat for lunch, the price was a bit high. If you're a real buffet lover, you may not find the the case. The building itself is interesting and has a long history. I was told by one of the servers that starting in April tours begin to come in and there is usually a line of people waiting to eat. We were there at the beginning of March. Only a handful of people were having lunch.
Great place to have lunch with you wife. We loved the southern food that they serve. Not too expensive and nicely decorated to give that colonial feel. We go there when we are in town.
The tavern tour portions of Michie Tavern are interesting and informative. However, I am focusing on the food served. The fried chicken, ham, stewed tomatoes, green beans, cornbread, and cobbler are great with the chicken being the most outstanding. The food is served buffet style in a period dinning room (low ceilings). The price is a bit steep for a buffet but the food is so good that I have never minded paying the price.
We go to Michie Tavern at least once a year or more for lunch. This historic building houses one of the finest luncheries in the Charlottleville area. Here visiting Monticello? Michie is where you need to have lunch, hands down. In this historic landmark you'll enjoy a scrumptious buffet that includes the BEST fried chicken you'll ever eat, incredible stewed tomatoes, black eyed peas, slaw, other veggies, soup, dessert, biscuits/cornbread and beverage. And seconds are on the house. Maybe a little pricey for lunch, but it is worth every penny. Don't miss Michie if you are anywhere near it during the day. Not open for dinner!
Unique atmosphere, exceptional customer service and focus on a delightful dining experience. The fried chicken is to die for, the buttery-soft biscuits remind me of my grma's hoe-cakes made of buttermilk and cooked to perfection.
We weren't sure what to expect other than people telling us the fried chicken was outstanding. Eating here was great fun and the food was surprisingly good. We still talk about this one long after our visit!
Yo, the Michie Tavern can't be topped. We had some of the best fried chicken and mashed potatoes I've had during my time on this planet. Our waitress, Ashley, was bomb. I got a Traditional Ale and/or Lager, so unfortunately there were no free refills on that. But Ashley was all over our water glasses like white on rice. The experience was authentic and the food was delicious, y'all. The gift shop was mega-tight and I had a nice chit-chat with the cashier.Highly recommended if you're real. Not recommended if you're a fake trill buster.
Michie (pronounced "Mickey") Tavern is great for families, big groups, and tourists. The staff, dressed in period costume, serve a buffet of friend chicken, black-eyed peas, stewed tomatoes, biscuits, and other southern favorites. It's is the perfect pit stop if you're doing the Ash-Lawn/Monticello thing.
Tourist attraction for sure! It was a fun visit. One we would only do once for the sake of doing it. The food is a step above a great country buffet (like wildfire grill in town) only very over priced for the ambiance, experience and history of it all. So if you like eating off pewter plates, being served by very friendly southern colonial staff dressed in period clothes, and sout herb cooking is your jam! Here's the place to go!If your a foodie or have the desire to eat a Resturant that will blow your socks off, I can name 10 within 5-15 minutes away that will make you come back for more!
Great food, Great Service, neat atmospherethe chicken and mash potatoes are my favorite!usually a little bit of a wait, but is well worth it
We take all of our houseguests here for this family style meal. It is a great accompaniment to a visit to Monticello and/or Ashlawn. Expect to eat a lot and to be very full by the time you leave. Walk down the hill to the gift shops to knock off a few calories!
Friendly service and delicious food. The fried chicken is amazing. Nice atmosphere and I enjoyed waking around and looking at the shops. Great place to take guests.
