Great place to visit the day we went was not too busy and so was quite peaceful outside by the river. As with many of the Government run places in the states it was clean tidy and friendly. If you are interested in this history they have done a great job of letting you wander around and imagine what it must of been like for the settlers. I
A brilliant day out. The re-enactments were excellent as were the buildings and the grounds upon which they were located.
There are two Jamestown attractions located within about one mile of each other. One is Historic Jamestowne (part of the Colonial National Historical Park operated by the National Park Service) which is the original site of Jamestown. The second is Jamestown Settlement which includes a re-created fort and three replica ships. This review is for the latter, Jamestown Settlement, which is a great family destination. The Visitor’s Center is large and well-organized, with an outstanding 25-minute film to start your visit. Next are several galleries with attractive exhibits documenting the decades of the 1600s. Beyond the Visitor’s Center is an extensive walking area which includes a re-created Powhatan Indian Village, a re-created James Fort, and replicas of the three ships that brought the original settlers to what became Jamestown. The entire facility is attractive, well-organized and entertaining; highly recommended.
I came to Williamsburg and did the tour. I loved this beautiful area. The National Park Service has done an amazing job preserving the area.
I'll be going here for my 3rd year in a row in about a month with my 8th grade class from Oregon. This is a must-experience! Try the Reuben sandwich in the cafeteria! Here's a true story from this place. Over 50 yrs. ago, the Queen of England visited. She was not pleased. They had not posted the "great seal" in the church/chapel as they would have done in the 1600s. The folks at Jamestown Settlement took note and when she returned some 50 years later, a smile could be seen on her face when she noticed the seal properly posted. I heard this story from a man that was there BOTH times she visited. It's this kind of attention to detail that makes this living museum great!
A good depiction of colonial life and the struggles they faced. Actors well versed on the character they play.
To say I'm a history buff, is a bit of an understatement. I love to study history and going to Jamestowne Settlement is a great way to do it. They have an excellent museum when you first enter with lots of information. Outside they have recreations of the fort and an indian village and the ships that first brought the colonists over. I particularly enjoyed watching the carpentry demonstrations.
Wow! Wonderful place to "experience" history!! My 2 grandchildren enjoyed this as much if not better than Colonial Williamsburg. A must see. Plan for a full day to truly experience.
Jamestown Settlement was an amazing adventure. It is well worth the admission price-about $16 for an adult. We visited on Sunday afternoon, February 22. It was cold (but sunny) so there were very few other visitors at that time. We stopped at the onsite cafeteria before we started going through the settlement. The layout of the cafe is confusing and the staff did not appear very friendly even though the cafeteria was almost deserted. The Brunswick stew was rather blah as was the soup of the day. The sandwiches were ok. We spent alot of time going through the indoor galleries and watching the most excellent film presentations. The exhibits were of Smithsonian museum quality. Top notch. The Powhatan Indian Village was great fun. We crouched down to enter one of the houses through the low door and once inside were fascinated by the campfire smoke drifting lazily up and out the top of the house while we sat on fur covered benches and took in the authentic trappings of this era while a guide in full costume chatted with us and answered questions. From there we hiked a short way to board a recreation of the Susan Constant ship. We were allowed to explore it from one end to another, up and down and it was great fun! A crowing rooster met us at the entrance to James Fort and we were on our own to explore the houses, storehouse, church, etc. Be sure to ask one of the costumed townsfolk why the beds were so short back in the day. We had a most wonderful time visiting Jamestown Settlement. If we are visiting the area again, I would definitely make plans to revisit Jamestown Plantation.
We did an impromptu family road trip and decided to stay in Williamsburg and take our kids (11 and 8) to Jamestown. While the day was chilly, we really had a good time. The outdoor exhibits were great and the staff was very informative and took the time to teach the kids and answer all the questions that they had. We enjoyed watching the native americans make a knife sheath and other tools using a deer's leg. The settlement is a great value and nice family stop.
