What an interesting attraction! Belmont is the former residence of the American figure painter, Gari Melchers (1860-1932). The museum consists of the artist's home, gardens, the studio, and galleries. This landmarked 18th-century estate and studio are decorated with the late painter's personal artwork, collected paintings of other artists, and lovely antiques, including numerous Dutch pieces. The Melchers who had no children left all to become a museum now operated by the University of Mary Washington. The entire staff were friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and gracious. We thoroughly enjoyed each building we toured, with the house my favorite while my husband (a painter) particularly enjoyed the studio and gallery. He left inspired by Gari Melchers techniques. The staff encouraged us to return in the spring when the gardens will be in bloom.

When Gari Melchers and his wife passed away, they left their home, intact with all of its furniture, art and other memorabilia to the local University of Mary Washington which overseas the current operation. Visitors are taken through the house and grounds by volunteers who tell the story of the Melchers and their lives not only in Fredericksburg (summers mainly) but also New York (main residence) and abroad. A lovely place that provides a glimpse into the history as well as the art of a very fine and prolific American artist.

We had not been to Belmont for over 5 years. Tour guide was very good. House is a circa 1900 artist residence full of paintings and many Dutch furniture pieces. Studio includes artist tools of the trade and a wide range of Melchers art. Estate sits on a magnificent hill overlooking the river. Probably prettiest in spring or summer, but we had a glorious rare February day. Film is a must-see before exploring the house and grounds.

This home is in Falmouth which is accross the river from Fredericksburg. It was built in the late 1700s and is beautifully maintained. It was the home of Geri Melchers who was a famous American Painter. The home and grounds are beautifully maintained. The view of the Rappahannock river from this breathtaking. We have visited this home in all seasons and have found it beautiful. This visit was in December. The studio is filled with beautiful paintings.

The art, architecture, and history here is amazing. The house has some free days and coupons available, so I do recommend trying to schedule your visit for that, but if you can't be there for a free day, then it is still well worth it. I have been there many times since I was very young.

My wife and I have passed this museum several times and finally went in. What a pleasant surprise. The guide was wonderful as we toured the house and studio learning about Melchers.. The floral garden was past its prime. We will have to return next Spring

I have been on numerous house tours, but this one was different. This one is of Gari Melcher, a painter who did many fascinating paintings. If you love art, you will love this place. The house and gardens are great also.

We walked the grounds (they were preparing for a wedding so could not go in some of the places). What a beautiful place! The house is amazing, the grounds are gorgeous. It was a beautiful autumn day, exactly what a place like this house and grounds are meant to showcase. You will love it!

Who knew we had such a famous artist who lived in the area? The place is wonderful to check out however our guide was just so-so. The house and studio were amazing and made it worth the trip and the cost. I would not recommend taking the nature trail unless you are really light on your feet. They are very rough and have not been maintained. There is a bridge over a ditch that is about really to collapse. This place is in need of a Boy Scout Eagle project.

Very nice place and good tour. You get a good sense of life of a well-off artist in the 20-40s...but still be intriqued to learn more. It is a well maintained property and quite nice walks around. Some nice paintings which made you think about how he was considered at his time and now.

Gari Melchers is an overlooked American artist whose major works will be recognized and whose previously unseen pieces will astound! All showcased in his lovely home and studio. Definitely should be a "Must See" on your Fredericksburg visit list.

I came here for a meeting this visit, but I came once before a couple years ago just as a tourist. Both times I was impressed by the loveliness of the place and careful maintenance of the buildings and grounds. The Pavilion is a great choice for meetings/gatherings. Melchers was a very talented artist and his home and studio are definitely worth a visit!

We visited the welcome center by accident just because the place was so beautiful and ended up taking family pictures here! Amazing gardens! The buildings are all beautiful! It is worth visiting!
