Other than laying in the sun why would anyone go there? Swim in the river next to a fishing pier? No way, the smell in that area of Newport news is horrible and worse at that beach. Crime is an issue in that part of town so be careful if you decide to venture out there
Pros: Family friendlyLocation is right off of the James River BridgeHas the Virginia War Museum inside of it (well worth a visit)Nice play area for kidsBeach is small but not crowded, on a good day you could get great sunset photosHas a small lake, rose garden, military tanks and cannons all over the park, fishing pier for adults and kids, YMCA, and a launch ramp for boats Cons: Women's public restrooms near the beach were disgusting, I took off 1 star just for thisThere was trash all over the park and beachRose garden was severely neglectedNo park employees in sight, including lifeguards and securityIt is in lower Newport News, which is one of the top 10 cities for crime in the state
My boys, 8 and 4, loved the huge playground! It was big, plenty of equipment, great shape, and some shaded areas. After the playground we went to the beach and did a little swimming. Clean sand and a great little spot that wasn't too big or too crowded!
The park is a small park mostly for kids. My interest is in photography. Lake Biggins, in the park is a good place for some different birds in the late daylight. During the fall and spring bird migrations, you can see many different kinds of ducks and shore birds. I even saw an otter one evening.
After touring the Virginia War Museum, we stopped by this beach area. It is right on the James River. The sand wasceasy to walk on and wasn't long walk to water. Very clean and had lifeguards. Water was warm. It would be nice to spend a day there for relaxation.
This is a great spot. You can imagine you are at the ocean if you try. It is pretty, accessible, free, and even has a fast-food type restaurant and bathrooms. Really glad we found this gem.
This is a small local beach on the James River. It's a nice place to spend the day. Often the water is off limits because of contamination. Later in the summer, the jellyfish become a nuisance. It's a good place to take the little ones to play in the sand. There's a huge playground (Fort Fun) nearby.
Very pretty view of the water! Beach had lifeguards while we were there. Boat docks and fishing pier. There's a seafood restaurant as well. Beach volleyball set up. Would be a cool place to hang out for the day, unfortunately we didn't have time this visit.
Didnt know what to expect in Newport News but the beach is a great place to do something free and fun. Clean not crowded when we went. Lifeguard on duty during specific times. A museum and nice play area located just around the driving circle. I didn't feel comfortable going full body in the water because there were fish jumping around. The water isn't clear so I didn't know what I might come across. Other than that its a fun family environment and i plan to visit the next time we go to Newport news
It is just another beach. It is not as big as the other ones, and often smells funny. I wouldn't trust the water. It does however offer a nice view of the James Rive Bridge. I have always just passed up the beach to walk the trails leading to the War Museum and other historical sites in the same area.
Smallish beach on the James River. Clean. Kick your shoes off and bury your toes in the sand!Good fishing pier on site and nice play area for the kids close by.
i do alot of kayaking, and you can launch your kayak for free out there and fish by the james river bridge. fishing is pretty good off shore there, alot of croaker. the kids park was also recently re-done and its nice as well. they have a stocked trout pond, however fishing that isnt very good, prob due to the amount of algie in the water.
I went to Huntington Park Beach for relaxation, however it was packed. However I went to Buckroe Beach and had a much better time, was able to relax and enjoy my time there, highly recommended.
We took an extended weekend to Hampton/Newport News, VA. We always visit Huntington Beach Park because it's less crowded than Buckroe Beach and Virginia Beach. We had hoped to spend most of the day at the beach and wanted to graba bite to eat at the little eatery there on the beach. It was supposed to open at 11 but we waited and waited until we decided to pack up and leave. it was a Saturday and it really should have been up and running. There were several families there and we weren't the only ones waiting for the eatery to open. It would be nice if the eatery took debit or credit cards as not many beach goers carry cash on the beach with them.
