Hello, thank you for visiting the History Museum of Western Virginia! We appreciate your feedback and are happy to know you found our exhibits interesting. While exhibits take years to plan and complete we are working on a children's exhibit on the region and appreciate suggestions from all of our visitors. We hope to see you again!
We made a day of several museums in the area and this is one of the better ones. The exhibits were well planned and descriptive and interesting to a wide variety of age groups. There wasn't a lot to see but what was there was done well.
It's tiny but packed with stuff. You can skim over the surface or let yourself get totally pulled back through time - the choice is yours
While small compared to larger cites the museum was very well done with an assortment of displays now that the renovation is complete. From early Native American life up to the present day the displays take your through the regions history. Tailored to adults and older students we found it very easy to understand the signage and vocal/media displays.Tip- bring a sweater as it is VERY cold.
We were given a first class description of Roanoke by a first class receptionist. She gave us excellent directions to the various museums in the area. The history museum itself was more that worth seeing.
Although the sign on the door said the Museum was open while we were there, the door was locked. We rang the bell and one of two employees sitting in our "We're closed because of the weather"--the weather was fine and every other business/museum in Roanoke was open; there were people walking and driving on all of the DT streets. "You mean to tell me that there are two employees in the msueum and two tourists who want to see it, but you won'tt let us in?" "Yes". Two hours later, when we walked past the museum again, those same two employees were standing in the window, chatting and watching people on the street. :(
The exhibits were interesting but it was basically just two rooms. Which is fine if you are downtown already. Don't miss it if you are at Center on the Square or are going to the Taubman Museum around the corner.
This is a tiny museum on one of the floors in The Center on the Square in downtown Roanoke, VA. The museum has a small section showing artifacts of the Indians who once lived in the woodlands of Virginia. There are some small displays on early settlers of Virginia. Then there was a hall of antique dresses from the 1950s back to the early 1800s. There was a BIG display of derby cars, which might interest some people, but I thought it was a big waste of space. This museum should have been free, but it was $3 to get in... for about 7 minutes worth of entertainment.
