We stopped by on our way back to our hotel which was 5 minutes away. We were able to get in the last guided tour at 3:30. We spent about 35 minutes in the church with our guide. She gave us a lot of information during this time and when we left my husband said he felt like he was in a history class. After our tour was over she mentioned that the church does a reenactment of Patrick Henry's speech. I think those who were able to see this, rated this attraction higher.
When we went in the organist was rehearsing for Sunday service the organ in this church is just fantastic. The stained class is timeless and there is so much history in this church. Don't miss out take the time to go see this.
We saw the Patrick Henry speech recreation, unforgettable experience. A great slice of history.......
The famous church isn't the reason to visit Richmond's East side- it's actually the 19th century neighborhood filled with brick row houses that are federal, greek revival and Italianate! Park the car and stroll the streets especially the St. John's chuch block and the 2600 block of Franklin street (for Greek revival at its best.) the houses are restored and older than the houses in the fan. Richmond natives have never supported this neighborhood making it a place for new comers to dwell - people without pre-conceived ideas of the city. It is certainly the oldest and the most charming neighborhood ; the architecture is among the best in Richmond. Libby Hill park has famous views of the James River . The other end offers a fascinating look at Richmond's downtown . And should you tire, check out Millie's restaurant, the hill cafe or the Roosevelt for the best cuisine in town. It truly is where the locals go to eat : Proper pie, the WPA bakery and Alamo bar be que are famous. And Dutch requires reservations. Church Hill is so much more than Patrick Henry ever imagined it would be!
I was very fortunate to experience the reenactment of Patrick Henry's speech one glorious September Sunday, ironically with a cousin from the UK who had actually written about the Civil War in the US as part of her thesis. (I am also from England) We joked during the speech that all is forgiven! The church is still an active church and attending a service here as well as a visit is well worth it. Plenty of street parking available but come early.
If you are a history buff, your time in Richmond should start at St. John's church, on "Church Hill", not just for what happened inside the church -(re-enactments of the Virginia convention on the eve of the Revolutionary War)- but also for the views of Church Hill, one of the best preserved and largely intact historic urban neighborhoods in the United States. Edgar Allen Poe's mother is buried there.
This is worth a visit to hear the re-enactment of Patrick Henry's "Give me liberty or give me death" speech.
a good place to take your children for a hands-on history lesson. It has beautiful grounds where you can walk around and the architecture is absolutely beautiful. I nice visit for couples and families.
Beautiful architecture and to be able to walk the grounds was really fantastic. So much history from the founding fathers to the civil war in a 10 block area.
Patrick Henry gave his famous speech here, and the grounds alone are worth a visit — the colonial church building and accompanying graveyard are well worth a visit. Colonial Richmond at its best.
Went with my mother, aunt and husband. Beautiful scenery around-the headstones, the church, the grounds. Inside the church looks like it has been untouched by modern technology. The tour guide was great and the gift shop has some really neat items. A must do!!
I am embarrassed that we have lived in Church Hill for over 10 years and made our first visit to St. John's this past Christmas Eve. It is beautiful inside. Lovely stained glass windows. We will go for the re-enactment of Patrick Henry's speech this spring. Don't delay your visit like we did.
This is a beautiful, truly historic place. Try to visit when they are doing a tour so you can hear about the history of this church. I would love to visit during a service; the atmosphere is wonderful.
St. John's is where American history was made and the knowledgeable docents will entertain you with the facts behind Patrick Henry's "Give me liberty or give me death," the grave of Mrs. Poe, mother to Edger Allen and how it survived the Civil War.
Historic church, lovely location, excellent tour by Patsy describing the history of the building and Patrick Henry.
