If you are going across the river, I would advise Arlington Cemetery and all of its sights first. However, if you have additional time, make the stop to see this. First the monument itself is awesome to see. In addition, it sits on a hill with great views of DC, the Capitol, Monument and Lincoln Memorial. We visited on Moonlight Monuments visit. I had never been at night and it was an interesting experience as well.
a huge statue in a quiet area . beautifully sculpted walk all around to feel the full majesty of itThe flag looks like it has been hoisted up but it us part of the sculpture
An impressive monument to an iconic moment in WWII. Bring the kids and then explain to them how the US Marines at Iwo Jima ended up flying two different flags from the top of Mr. Suribachi. The photographer who caught the moment, and created the model for the memorial, should be given a medal, this image evokes such powerful emotions. There is limited parking on the west side of the monument, and some street parking as well. You can then walk over to the Arlington Cemetery or the Carillion which is also close by. No bathrooms, no vendors, etc. Just a very cool and majestic monument.
You've seen this in history books, on tv, in the movies, etc----so, see it in real life. You can simply drive around it, if you are strapped for time, because it is not large and "right there." If you're a runner like I am, set your feet in the direction of the Lincoln Memorial. It's not very far from the backside of it----but watch for the street and traffic.
This monument is more impressive in person than any photos I have seen. My father and brother both served in the Air Force and I have always been patriot. It is a powerful experience.
Do you want to see how the U.S. Marines became who they are? Well, this is the place. Thoughtfully assembled and well researched, this place tells the history of the Marine Corps from its inception until today. Easy access . . . free parking . . . what more can you ask for. You may see enlistment ceremonies and promotions going on as Marines treasure this place. The gift shop is great and the cantina is standard fare. Allow at least 2 hours for your visit as there is much to see and observe.
I visited the memorial with my son. It was 70 years ago this month that the battle for IWO was fought and there my father died. Hew was killed from a motar round. It was just a moment in time that I stood still and could only think about the battle. I will not forget!
The memorial itself will bring a lump to your throat weather you are a Marine or not. However plan to go when they are conducting the Silent Drill. This is something you have to see to believe. The crowd stood and watched in stunned silence as the Corp conducted the drill. Also, don't miss the Marine Corp Museum in Triangle, Va
There a many places where the flying of the National Colors have special meaning. This is one of the most spectacular. A blue sky, slight wind and rippling stars and stripes puts a feeling within me that I would hope everyone could share. If you can see this from a plane, car, bus or the large green lawn that surrounds it and take in the moment be it fireworks on the 4th of July or a short pause in the daily events of life. I first saw this in 1966 while serving in the US Navy and most recently in 2014 during a vacation visit to the capitol.
I've seen lots of pictures of this memorial, but you really do have to see it in person to truly appreciate it. It was much bigger than I anticipated. It's not far from Arlington Cemetery so it's easy to hit up both places in one trip.
We visited the memorial on a DC bus tour. It was one of my favorite memorials on the tour. If you are in the area, don't miss seeing this!
We love going to this park / memorial and bring a picnic. They offer a cool Marine Corps memorial of Iwo Jima, and very large grass areas with a view of Washington DC. Great place to bring picnic, play frisbee, and just relax with a wonderful view of DC. Also is the perfect place to watch the fireworks on July 4th, but you have to get there very early to have a parking spot or walk from the Rosslyn Metro.
I had real issues finding this from visitng Arlington, but then located the easy path (for the walk back), so ended up walking by the road through the snow. However, this place is inspiring, somber and amzing to reflect the various campaigns. Really enjoyed it and visiting here makes the trip to Arlington a well worth while detour. But plan how you get here so you dont have issues like i did! The walk from arlington might put some people off.
I was not a marine but you cannot see this memorial and not be reminded of the tremendous sacrifices that the marines and the men and women in all our uniforms have made so that we can now enjoy the freedom we have today. It's a 10-15 minute walk from the Rosslyn Metro station and easy to get to. There's a large plaque there that explains the monument and the photograph upon which it was based. If you are in Arlington or visiting the national cemetery, don't miss it.
We walked from Arlington Cemetery to this statue. It was quite a walk, but it is a huge statue and was very interesting reading the markings.
