We saw the sign for the fort and decided to go see what was there. It was well worth the detour. There is a lot of history to the fort. It has been a few years since we went there but I would go there again when I am in the area.

After reading the post before mine, I was really wondering if it was going to be any good. Luckily, my friend had gone earlier and recommended it. Yes, some of the building are not standing and you do have to walk a little bit. However, they have several golf carts you can use. I found the lady to be quite informative about the fort and ghost town. The price is cheap and a fun way to spend some time. We were also told about the "ghost town", but unfortunately, we didn't go. Next time I will have to do it.

Old or run down historic houses. Nice field trip idea though

Fort Griffin was the most important frontier fort in Texas after the Civil War. It and the town nearby were a hub of activity in the war with the Indians and for trade. The remains of some original fort buildings and the reconstruction of others provide a good idea of the size of the installation. The location of the fort high above the Clear Fork of the Brazos River provides nice views over the surrounding countryside. The official state longhorn herd has a home here. For people with an interest in the history of the frontier, this is a must see. Also interesting is the The Flat ghost town below the fort where the original jail still stands along with a few reconstructed buildings. The Texas Historical Commission marker states that frontier notables Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp were there, along with characters named Big Nose Kate and Hurricane Minnie. Cattle drives along the Western Trail came through on their way North to markets. An abandoned 19th century metal bridge over the river is closed to traffic but can be walked over. The staff of the fort's visitor center can provide driving directions to the ghost town. Across the highway is a recreation area with camp sites. At site #13, steps lead down to the river. The angle is steep and some steps are high.
