Black Gap is a great wilderness area with limited access. They have about 30 primitive camping sites, some with shelters and picnic tables, some without. The camping sites are accessible to hunters and campers with a permit. All sites are back dirt roads, some 4-wheel drive. There are also about 20 fish camps down on the Rio Grande. Black Gap is a wonderful place to get away from it all and enjoy nature in the Chihuahuan desert at its best. Please keep in mind the fundamental rule of using a wilderness area - carry it in, carry it out.

Black Gap is a very rugged place to visit, but is more picturesque and stunning than Big Bend NP. Many places require 4WD. There is a yearly TPWD permit fee required. Every thing you might need must be brought in as there are absolutely no services provided. If you like back country primitive camping, being very alone, you will just love this place. We visited in February for six days and never saw a person other than the one resident park official. It is a hunter's dream, as we saw lots of wildlife. One attraction of note. Starting at the main entrance gate, with the history sign, there are 10 stops along FM 2627 pointing out different Chihuahuan vegetation. the stops end at the Rio Grand with a spectacular vista. TPWD is updating the signage as some of the plants identified did not survive the drought.
