We live in the area and finally visited when our teen expressed interest in airplanes and the military. It was well laid out. Interesting for an hour or two for us.
Formerly known as the 8th Air Force Museum. Quoting from a publicity clip, "(An) historic journey from World War I to the present." Specific emphasis is placed on Barksdale AFB, the 2nd Bomb Wing and 8th Air Force and their roles in aerial bombardment. The museum building has displays of Army Air Corps and Air Force uniforms from WW I through the present. Of particular interest to me were materials related to the Flying Tigers. Outside, there are aircraft static displays, featuring 20 aircraft and including an SR-71 Blackbird, a P-51D Mustang, and a C-47, as well as two models of the B-52 and a KC-97 and KC-135. Also a British Vulcan bomber, a Russian MiG 21 and a Titan II reentry vehicle, the latter from the days when 8AF possessed Titan II missile sites. Access is through the North Gate of Barksdale AFB, and a picture ID is required for entry. Open year round, except for major holidays. A fascinating look back into history.
