Unfortunately, the museum was closed to add new exhibits when we visited, but we did get to see Bastrop's first fire truck and chat with a delightful and knowledgeable volunteer at the Visitor Center. This should be your first stop in the historic downtown district!
Definately worth visiting, displays are pretty good and do a good job displaying the Interesting history of the area. We checked out a quilt show which was a temporary display. I want to go back sometime when I have a little more time.

The Museum and Visitors Center is a work in progress, with new exhibit items added as time and resources permit. The exhibits that are in the museum provide considerable information about Bastrop County's history. The volunteer docent with whom I interacted was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. She made several suggestions for future visits with my wife. This is a great resource for visitors to Bastrop.
The Museum and Visitor Center of Bastrop County Historical Society has a very nice and new museum. It is still a work in progress since they moved from their old building. The exhibits they have a very good and children love the old fire truck. The building used to house the jail, fire house and city offices. The large windows in front are where the fire trucks were driven in. They even preserved the old brick area where the fire hose was stored. In the basement is where the jail was located. They have a very nice gift section with a good selection of local items as well as children's quilts made by the Quilters of the Bastrop Senior Center. The staff are very friendly and are happy to answer questions help find locations that visitors are wanting to see. They have brochures of other local attractions.
We arrived here late in the afternoon - interesting exhibits about Bastrop's history and more recent events. They also didn't seem to mind our teenage son bashing out "chopsticks" on the piano.
