With lots of classes for children, this nature center located in a former residence is a great way for local children and adults to get a quick look at what the area was like long before there were the vast subdivisions extending about 30 miles in all directions.

Conveniently located in Bellaire, this 3.75 acre nature park is perfect for anyone who loves to explore the indigenous wildlife, catch a glimpse of countless rare birds, or just relax in the tranquil environment that the NDC has to offer. The historic Henshaw house is a place for learning as children's camps and birthday parties and other events are held throughout the year. The Pumpkin Patch in October and Spring Fling in April are two of my family's favorite events. A definite must see for all visitors and residents!

For our daughter, the real draw were the "discovery rooms" on the second floor. In those areas, they had a lot of fun and educational activities. They even had a puppet theater! This facility doesn't have all of the latest "bells and whistles" of other science centers, but it was "hands on" learning. My feeling was that this location allows children to explore nature in safe and supportive environment. They also have an herb garden out back, which is also "hands on." I did find one negative. I don't believe that the building exterior, or interior are wheelchair accessible. I think you could get around the herb garden okay. If you have a wheelchair, I'd still call them. I think they'd be willing, and able to put something extra special together for you. Please consider making a donation when you visit (there's a box on the second floor), as they don't charge an admission fee.

This hidden gem is a fabulous place to go wind down and enjoy everything about nature. Great birding location, lots of beautiful wildflowers, animals for children to see, pavilions for picnics or birthday parties, wonderful 1920's house converted to a discovery place for all. Children love learning about nature in this outdoor classroom. The staff are friendly and will take time to talk with you and your children. If you haven't visited, you are really missing out!!
