Interesting setting on 400 acres. Cross an old suspension bridge to get to the winery, a red metal building. Inside tasting room is finished well with wood trim, polished concrete, nice restrooms, good bar tables, alcove for a bit more privacy. Bar is nice with large windows looking into the winery interior behind the bar. Outside is large grassy area with a small deck in one corner under the lone tree. Not a great outdoors place to sit and drink on anything other than the few decent Texas days. The wines are decent for Texas wines. The bland du bois is estate grown and makes a decently crisp white. They also serve two other versions that are very sweet to my palate. The reds are Texas reds; the barn red is quaffable blend of cabernet, syrah, and zin. Again, it is a Texas winery and there is only so much they can do with the soil and the tastes of the locals is for sweeter wine. It is local and we like visiting on a hot day; the dry white does the trick on those days and I can sip a glass of the barn red easily enough.
The wine was okay but the service sucked. My husband and I went for a tasting and it was $10 each for 6 different choices so we split and got to try one of everything. My husband ended up liking a port and a chardonnay but I wasn't blown away by any of them. The one person in there was printing out menus, sweeping, and in the back most of the time we were in there. We spent a lot of time waiting for her to come back to the bar to get the next wine choice. The room is comfortable and inviting so we didn't rush out but the wines that might have won any awards were in the back and we couldn't read what the wines were or what the awards were. At the end she charged us for the two wines and then the two tastings which we had already paid for. That was what just tipped me over the edge wondering why two wines cost $90. After we confronted her she refunded us for one of the wine tastings instead of both and we wont be coming back. Was she that overwhelmed with not selling wines but chores that she overlooked the second refund or did she do it purposely. Great location, love the option to watch manufacturing wish it happened on weekends but the only bad thing is the service here currently.
Hadn't ever heard of this winery before, but found it through a tourism guide for the Brenham area. Nice selection, very helpful people that took time to talk about the wines and vineyard. Even though there were lots of people there for tastings, we didn't feel rushed and had a very nice experience.
We were looking for a different winery and stumbled onto the Saddlehorn instead. What a great find. About 5 years old and really nicely done. Our "pusher" as he called himself was super friendly, very knowledgeable, and seemed happy to share what he knew about the wines, the winery, and the area. Some very nice wines. We came away with 2 bottle and a few thing from the gift area. Glad we couldn't find the winery we were looking for!
Celebrating our Anniversary we decided to venture on the Texas Bluebonnet Wine Trail. this was our 2nd stop and ended up being one of our favorites. Establishment is beautiful. From the minute you drive up, just beautiful. Inside was spacious, plenty of room to stand around bar area or to sit. Staff very friendly. Our server actually gave us directions to the back scenic route to our other destination and was so glad she did, we seen parts of Texas we had never seen before. Beautiful drive! We loved Happy Trails and Spanish Semi. We ended up buying a couple of bottles. Overall excellent stop. Next time I would love to make the drive to just this stop and grab a bottle of wine to sit and relax!
The first time I went I just looked and asked questions. I live in the area and I can be curious! Brought my husband back for a wine tasting one lazy Sunday when we didn't want to do much of anything but didn't want to be couch potatoes either! It happens! One of the owners was assisting us with our tasting. She was not as friendly as the manager I had spoken with previously. She was very informative and helpful I just don't think she is a "people person" The wine was really good but we didn't purchase any. I went to a charity auction and found a wine tasting party for eight being auctioned. Had to have it! So we gathered some good friends and planned the party. Travis, the manager, was working when I set it up and was so helpful. He was also there and handled our party that day. They had some crackers to munch on between sips but they also had cheese trays which we purchased. Highly recommend having something in your tummy! The tastings I have done previously have all been more generous servings but these were poured using a device that measures an exact amount. I think an ounce, maybe an ounce and a half? Still helped to have something to munch on though! The trays weren't fancy just some cheddar, Monterrey jack and some summer sausage and a few olives. Might be interesting if there was a local cheese and sausage offered instead but hey.... It's a winery not a restaurant! Travis was very personable and informative. We learned quite a bit about wine that day! Some I knew but some I didn't which was great! Most in my party prefer beer over wine but they all had a great time and enjoyed the wines. They have a good varietal selection from very dry to very sweet. I was surprised how much I liked some! Wound up buying 6 bottles and joining their wine club! Not something I have ever done but am enjoying! Definitely take this one in if you find yourself in the area. Beautiful property and good wine! The Happy Trails and the Sunset were our faves!
From the moment the four of us walked in, there was just a hint of attitude. We were there for the wine tour, but the staff was unhelpful and dismissive. We were clearly not their demographic. We all said that we will not be back. We like Windy and Cork This much better.
We were glad to find a winery open on a weekday and enjoyed a private tasting as we were the only 2 people there at the time. Wines were very nice; we bought several. I was suprised that the tasting fee was charged as well as the cost of the bottles of wine. Often that is waived with purchase. The winery pourer told us about a meadery nearby and suggested that we might enjoy visiting it. We did, and we did! So glad we told us about it.
I stopped by Saddlehorn on the way back to Houston from Austin. It's an easy jump off Hwy 290. The tasting room and grounds were nice and well appointed. I felt comfortable and welcome as soon as I arrived. The tasting room experience was fun and the staff was knowledgeable about the wines they served. The wine was OK. Not bad, but nothing really blew me away. This isn't a knock on them, just personal preference. That's the way it is with wine, right?
We are parents to a 8 month old & Saddlehorn is about a 45min drive. We were able to have a weekend & it was the perfect getaway. The winery is beautiful & the grounds are so relaxing. We felt as if we were in the hill country! The staff was great. We decided to invite some of our friends to come experience this hidden jewel for my birthday. We will definitely be coming back as often as possible.
After being disappointed with windy winery, we were so pleased with the wine and service we recieved at Saddlehorn! Highly recommend !!
