We took a Sunday drive and explored this place because a friend of mine recommended it. It was a winter's day in Texas but it was sunny and 70 degrees. I love Texas. What a quiet, peaceful place. We were looking at the campsites for a possible stay in the future. The premium campsites were right on the water and just lovely. Being that it's a state park I would think it would be hard to get a reservation because they are usually very reasonably priced and fill up quickly but I will definitely investigate this for a future stay. Just gorgeous!

The fire damage to PK was bad. However much of the park was untouched. We paid for the premium campsite water/electric after we arrived and drove around we changed to water only campsite 85. Awesome views from our table and set back in the trees away from wind. What's nice about this park is it is not over run with the party animals. Will post pictures.

For years I have heard about how great Possum Kingdom lake was, so maybe I was expecting too much, but from everything I have heard, I could not wait to take my wife and kids camping for the first time. We went over Father's Day weekend. Reserving the site and getting to the park was great. We stayed in the Shady Grove section of the campsites. The campsites were about what you would expect, plenty of trees and shade, overall the campsite was pretty good. That was about the best part of the trip. Everything else was very mediocre or worse. We decided to go swimming right after we arrived and when we got to the beach, it looked like a 20X50 stretch of water surrounded by rocks and a little sand. I understand the lake is way down due to the drought so I will give this part a semi pass. We were able to swim for a while but quickly got bored with the limited space. I will say the lake is clean and does not have that lake smell (which is good). After we got back to the site we decided to go fishing. I was super excited as this was the first time my girls have been fishing. We went to the ONE designated fishing area along the entire park and apparently you must be a certified rock climber to get down to the shore to fish, and once you get there, there is no real flat ground to stand and no piers to fish from. Pretty disappointed in this part. Again, I know the water levels are low, but it was a good 20 feet down to the shore line, and it is a lot of loose rocks to traverse down. Pretty dangerous for a 6 year old and a 3 year old. We looked at a few other parks before we decided on PK, one of the other things that really appealed to me was the map showed playground areas for the kids. On the map of the park the playground areas were designated by a child going down a slide on the maps key. So it was pretty ironic when the playground consisted of 4 swings...period. The closest thing to a slide in the entire park was sliding down the face of the cliff trying to get to the fishing shoreline. The last thing I have to complain about is there is literally NOTHING within 60 miles of the park, so don't forget anything. There is a general store in the park, but it closes at 6pm. If you forget anything it is 2 hours round trip.

This park was enjoyable and the staff were friendly and accommodating. There were several RV sties that were level. It's a shame the fires have scarred this area. There are Geocaches about the area. We won't return as there are many other state parks that we thought were more scenic, however, I do recommend you stay there if you are in the area. If you have a small boat or jet ski surely this would enhance the outing tremendously as the lake is great! We love Texas State Parks!

Visited Possum Kingdom State Park to check out the camping and lake and was so surprised to see how dessimated the surrounding area is by the 2011 fire. The surrounding area doesn't really affect the lake, but it was a shocker. The poor lake is down by 4 - 5 feet; there are docks lying on dry ground; the people at the state park office said the rains keep going around them. I was pleasantly surprised to see how blue the water is, the camp ground is nice, the facilities at the state park look well taken care of, the staff was very helpful and pleasant, but hopefully there will be rain soon. It was really sad to see how low the lake is and what the 2011 fire did to the surrounding area and obviously there isn't anything anyone can do about these issues, but hope for lots and lots of rain.

Its a nice clean place to camp, affordable prices and easy access to the lake. Nice boat ramps and camping grounds.

We travel camper camped over a weekend in late June 2013. The park is delightful and the lake is beautiful. The public toilets were a bit hot and musty due to no airconditioning, but were clean and well stocked with toilet paper. It's a popular park so book ahead to get a good campsite.

My husband loves to fish and we went to check it out for this activity. We went thru the main entrance I think, the one from 180/ 33, but being such a big lake, it has several entrances. Before you get to 33 we saw another entrance. After paying the fee of $4 per adult, we drove around to check the facilities. There are cabins close to the store, where you can find snacks, food supplies, ice, water and many other suplies. I saw a gas pump and air for tires. Keep in mind that all these supplies are more expensive than at regular stores. So, try to bring all you need from home. You can walk to the lake shore, and the marina from your cabins. Plenty of picnic areas for day visitors as well. Small playground for kids. There are other water activities, like canoeing. There are grills to cook, picnic tables, some covered, areas to pitch your tent, and park your car. If you travel from Dallas is close to 3 hours with good traffic. The public areas looked fairly clean. The area is pretty isolated and you will not see a restaurant or stores for at least 15-20 miles from this specific entrance. It's deep pretty country there. It's an area with hills, ranches, cattle and for sure rattlesnakes. For more information you should check their website for directions, facilities, sports, photos, etc.

Lovely lake, nice homes, condos, and townhomes. The lake had a few amenities and is located near enough Mineral Wells and Graham to be a good place for recreation.

My family has been to this park twice now. I can tell you, it's better with a boat! We rented a pontoon boat with another family who we met at the park and spent a whole day exploring the lake. There was some impressive landscape out there that you just can't experience from the bank. BUT the boat ran out of fuel and we had to row the boat back to the dock. With four adults and six little kids, that took hours. It made awesome memories though. best trip we ever took with complete strangers! The hiking trails are nice there too, but watch out for snakes, saw several of those. The swimming area has a nice slope so kids of all ages can get out that enjoy safely. You can also swim out of the swimming area from the rocks by the camping areas. Both times we went the water was low and you would walk out into the lake a good distance, just jumping form rock to rock. Oddly enough, I've never seen an actual Opossum in Possum Kingdom, but plenty of SKUNKS! So watch out! Over all this was a great park though, the spots are kind od close together, but hey, it makes for interesting friends!

My husband and I loved to go fishing there since it was not so crowded as other parts of the PK Lake. We never camped there, but it has places for tents and trailers. It's quiet and peaceful there. This was the first place where deer actually ate carrots from my hand!

so much fun out on the water and camping! ans very beautiful scenerary!!!!!!! and all the rivers surrounding are just as much fun!

This lake is a great lake for boating. Not good for fishing. On the east side of the lake are many upscale homes and ammenities. The west side of the lake will provide more places for camping.

The water, sand, attractions, quaint homes, wildlife...it's got it all.

My family (myself, wife, 6-year old) camped over Labor Day weekend in a 19 foot long bumper-pull camper, and had an excellent time with others in my family who were also in their campers. We reserved a spot via the online system provided by the Texas State Park system, and stayed in a location overlooking the lake. About half of the spots in our loop had asphalt-paved locations for campers, and included standard and 50-amp power outlets, as well as a water hook-up. The other half had gravel spots to park campers, also with electric and water. There were no graywater/blackwater hookups at any of the individual sites, but one was provided as you left each of the two main camping areas. Other types of camping locations were also available…with/without water, without power, etc, for those who were tent-camping. Several of the tent camping spots were VERY spacious and were accommodating VERY large parties (i.e. 6-7 tents at a time). Overall the lake is very nice, but remote. The closest gas station is 50 miles to the south (in the direction of the interstate) or 25 miles to the North (in the direction of rural Texas). HOWEVER, there is an on-site camp-store with a lot of selection, and an old fashion gas pump (non-electronic) selling gas for an outrageous price. The swimming area is respectable, and you can rent boats for an afternoon on the lake. No fishing license required for anyone who had paid the entrance fee to a Texas State Park, so bring your poles. We didn’t use the parks showers, but heard they weren’t all that clean. We did rent a boat, and spent an afternoon on the lake, which was very nice (fewer stumps than we’re used to and beautiful scenery). We took the interstate in from Dallas, but drove back via rural Texas, which was actually faster and much more pleasant.
