As a Norwegian I was amazed to find this very nice little museum in the heart of Texas. Driving the back roads from Dallas in the direction of Austin we more or less stumbled upon this place. On top of everything it was supposed to be closed on the day we came by, but was opened to a busload of Norwegian exchange students, so we were able to come in and have a look. A lot of the exhibitions were about the early Norwegian and German settlers, and were very interesting. There was also a large exhibit on Cleng Persson, who came from the same area where I live. Great that we got to experience this!
Although it is in the process of opening, it has the largest collection of Norwegian artifacts and archives than any other museum or library in the South and Southwest.
Just visited the Bosque Museum and found it to be beyond expectations. We had been told about it by another museum docent and were anxious to visit. There is so much history there and it's displayed in a very professional and interesting way. The docent was very friendly and knowledgeable. All six in our group thought it well worth the time.
Affords the visitor a nice look back into the beginnings of the county, the town, and its people. Well worth taking an hour or more and visiting.
Being of Norwegian ancestry, I was very interested. We both found the historic displays very educational.
The museum has been rated one of the top small town museums in the state of Texas. Very good Norwegian collection and the award winning Horn Shelter exhibit is a unique gem. It portrays the burial of a man and small girl as it took place 11,200 years ago in Bosque County along the Brazos River.
This is a very, very good musuem. It has a wealth of displays and information about the Norwegian immigrants who settled the area back in the 1800s. The museum has a lot of other things to offer including early Texas displays. It is well done and the staff is friendly and helpful.
If you enjoy museums, don't miss the Bosque Museum. They exhibits are really great. I've probably visited 15 times.
My husband had to go to a museum for one of his graduate school classes, and when he picked out the Bosque Museum one, we decided to make a family trip out of it. This is a small museum located in the small town of Clifton, TX. The museum had a great variety of interesting pieces, which was surprising to me since so many of these small museums tend to not have too much to show, sadly. The best exhibit was the museum's primary one at the moment, the Horn Shelter exhibit. It featured a number of items from a burial ground discovered in the 1970s. The employee told us a good bit about the discovery, and there is an informational video visitors can watch in the exhibit room. There is also an interesting variety of weaponry from various periods of time, most being from the Civil War and later. There is an especially large collection of firearms on display, which I enjoyed. My personal favorite parts of this museum were the parts depicting the early Norwegian settlers in the Clifton area. There were many pieces showing home life, church life, and the general activities of these settlers. There is a small gift shop with a fun variety of things for sale, ranging from jewelry to wooden "pioneer era toys". There are also some Scandinavian decorative things and books (many about trolls), as well as some very amusing plastic Viking helmets. Our oldest of course had to have one of the helmets. All in all, I very much enjoyed this museum. If you're ever in Clifton, TX and have an hour or two, I'd really recommend visiting.
Just a neat place to go, nice people. Cool gift shop, interesting building, fun to learn about the history of the area.
