mercer street dancehall

We have been here six or eight times since it opened two years ago. We have always had a lot of fun because it is a real Texas dance hall, not a tourist attraction. The folks here are real country folks who live in the area. They arrive in pick-up trucks and, for them, boots, jeans and hats are not part of a costume. These are folks who actually ride horses and some of the young studs might be hopeful rodeo bull riders. What you don't find is testosterone fueled drugstore cowboys and girls that look like hos in boots. The place is big and well laid out; it has a big full bar, large dance floor, a big outdoor area and nice bathrooms. Parking is as you can find it in downtown Drippin' but there always seems to be room for everyone. The music varies like all of these places because there are different groups in all the time, but their Thursday night house group, the Flying Armadillos is a pretty good group. Over the past two years, the quality of the music has gotten steadily better and they now have some pretty much top stars like Kevin Fowler, Jimmy Vaughn and Dale Watson. The folks really dance here; that make for some good people watching. The dance floor is large so you aren't constantly bumping into others. You also aren't made to feel inadequate if you have two left feet like me. Sometimes they have dance lessons, if so, take them. If not, just watch what others are doing and try it yourself. There is no wrong way except to try to go clockwise around the floor.One note, bring cash, they don't take plastic. Prices are quite reasonable, especially compared with downtown Austin. Also, if you are coming from Austin, do not take a cab here and expect to get home. It will be a very long walk. If you have your own car, it is an easy place to find. Come to Drippin' early for dinner and afterwards, ease over to the Mercer Street Dance Hall to work off that piece of cake you shouldn't have had. You will not regret it. Have fun.

Nice place in the middle of town. You get free dance lessons from a wonderful instructor. Nice Dancehall with lots of room. Only bad things was no food - might want to consider adding that. But all in all it was a fine time in Dripping Springs.
