I remember the fire and am happy to see the old courthouse "up and running" again. These old gals are few and far between and can be seen for about five miles across the countryside. I seem to always smile when I approach her from the west, because her bell tower stands above everything else.
The original courthouse burned quite a few years and every effort was made to restore it to it's original beauty. Since Hillsboro has a rocky base, the basement was hewn out of rock and became the wals.
This courthouse was totally destroyed in 1993 but luckily at least one architectural piece of every achitectural element was saved for duplication. Today the courthouse stands again and is within 1/100th of an inch being exactly duplicated but with the most modern technological features.
I love the white stone building. The bathrooms are down in the basement and the walls are all stone. Every one that I have come into contact with there have been friendly and helpful!
Well I don't really know how much of the courthouse is original, however I do recall the fire which destroyed the building. They have done an outstanding job in restoration. We just made a drive by and did not go inside. We used to go to Hillsboro quite often to the Outlet Mall however many of those shops have closed as we noted this past week end. Looks like we may be ending that shopping trip unless something drastically happens to the shops. A trip to Hillsboro to see the old courthouse would be worth one's time.
Originally built in 1891, the courthouse was completely restored after a 1993 fire. Beautiful white limestone building of Second empire design, with striking clock tower. Inside details include restored wooden molding, doors and wainscoting, with tile floors and stained-glass windows. Occasional tours are available through county court office.
