We spent some time inside exploring the exhibits and talking to the volunteer staff working there. They were very knowledgeable and kind enough to share their knowledge with us. The walk inside the gated area was nice. Many of the plants were dormant because of our winter visit, but loved the name tags, letting us know what trees and plants were. From the parking lot, we strolled down the river trail. It was very nicely paved and we enjoyed watching the turtles sun on logs in the river, saw many birds and butterfies, and even a squirrel were spotted out along the trail.
All native "stuff". Very interesting, especially to recent transplants from different part of US. Remained fascinated throughout.
Wonderful place for the family! This was a nice stroll in a garden of native plants that is along the river.
My husband and I visited Kerrville and Fredericksburg for our anniversary. We decided one evening to walk the river trail at the nature center. The trail is beautiful. They are in the process of renovating, so you can't walk an entire loop at this time, but we didn't mind turning and walking all the way back. You walk right along the rivers edge, and the woods and river are beautiful! Plenty of squirrels running around and ducks and geese. You aren't supposed to feed the wildlife, but people were, and you can tell the animals are used to it. Squirrels were coming right to me. It was very quiet until we ran into a family with kids, but even that was fine. We just kept on walking ahead and it quieted down again. It was nice to see kids enjoying themselves anyway. The trail is open from dawn til dusk they say, but be aware the buildings are not. The restrooms were locked, as was the butterfly area. Be sure to check hours for the buildings if you think you'll need a restroom or want to see the butterflies. We went this month, December, so the weather in the evening was wonderful. I imagine it could be a hot walk in Texas heat, so bring water if you're going in warmer months.
This was a nice stroll in a garden of native plants that is along the river. They have special activities for children. One of the volunteers was off-putting with her criticism of other sites in Kerrville, especially when we had just said that was what brought us to the area.
The grounds for the Nature Center are just beautiful in a Hill Country Texas way. Lots of things going on, great resource for information on local birds and butterflies. A great community gem.
I really enjoyed this nature center. They have so many of the native plants labeled. The trail is really easy to navigate and has places to sit and enjoy the scenery. Looking forward to bringing my old dog in her stroller next time! Wish they sold seeds for the different plants. Like the stem with 3 flowers.
So, when everything is closed in Kerrville before the sun goes down, you can take a relaxing walk along the river! Their nature center has a paved walkway near the Gaudalupe River (I think) that's nice. They have some beautiful trees there. Also, the ducks will follow you! It was nice.
This is a nice little free Nature Center but lacks real excitement. Displays are a 5 on a scale of 10. The walking trail by the Guadeloupe River does make a visit worthwhile.
By visiting in January, of course nothing was in bloom We could imagine that during the summer it would be very wonderful. They have a nice little gift shop. We are going to try and go again when the weather is better.
Not a huge center but the staff and very knowledgeable and patient with young children. My grandkids, ages 10 and 12 insist on visiting the center every time they are in Kerrville and never get tired of the exhibits.
The garden is great, very informative. Then be sure to walk through fence gate to a path down to the river. Cross the little bridge, see the view I've added, and enjoy a wonderful walk. I would suggest taking a picnic down to the river, there's tables there and a beautiful setting.
This was a very well designed 'park' and the locals should really take advantage of it - we did see quite a few people there walking (with and without their dogs) I saw quite a few critters (bream, fancy bird that I haven't ID'd yet and a super friendly squirrel (he thought we were going to feed him) Really nice ! Only thing, I wanted to buy something in the gift shop and it was closed - it was advertised as open from 11-3 but signage on door said 1-3. They should correct that. Another couple wanted to go in too....
Was impressed with the additions and improvements to the Center since my last visit a few years ago. The self tour is laid out well and the plants are labeled which made it possible to identify each Hill Country native plant. The Visitor Center has a nice variety of gift items for all ages and the staff were enthusiastic and helpful. A nice place to visit before a leisurely lunch in Kerrville.
This was a nice hike, the majority was paved and easily accessible. The kids just wanted to run up and down the hills. We packed a lunch and did this in the early morning. We notice there were some classes/educational opportunities on a few weekends and would have loved to catch one so check the website. There are restrooms available that were clean and well maintained. We were excited to see a police presence as well on the hike.
