Everything you might possibly want to know about Lamar county or Paris, TX. We strolled through time. Make sure to stop at the outhouse. This one is modernized.
Located in the west part of town across the the restored 1912 Santa Fe Depot, the Lamar County Historical Museum is a recommended stop to learn about local and Red River area history. The museum is housed in a large warehouse building and is divided into three sections; the foyer featuring great historical postcards of Paris, Texas, the Octagonal Room, with a number of small galleries leading off it, featuring varying subjects of local history including gospel music, military, the fire of 1916, and period furniture, and the Sheb Williams Rural Life Museum, featuring the 1856 Baird Log House and farming and ranch items. Staffed by knowledgeable local volunteers, the museum is a diverse and fascinating stop for local history. Open Friday and Saturday 10-4. No entrance fee but donations are appreciated. The 1912 Santa Fe Depot was closed when I visited, but the historical museum or the Chamber of Commerce would know its visiting hours. Recommended.
