This park was a lot of fun for all of us. It's not far from I-30, but you really get the feeling that you are in the middle of nowhere when you get in the park. You are close enough to Mt. Vernon or Mt. Pleasant just in case you forget something you really need. (I know this because we did!) The campsites were great and spacious. Everything was easily accessible and the restrooms were spotless at all times. A huge plus for families with small children. There is a really nice, lighted fishing pier, close to the playground and restrooms. I got to fish while the kids got to play all in the same area. Can't ask for more than that! We will definitely be visiting this park again very soon.
The park has picnic tables, restrooms, as well as overnight cabins, boat ramps and fishing.Senior discounts as well.
Where to start! We are in love with this place. The campsites are huge and there are plenty of trees and brush between each one. We went in late on a Thursday to get a good site right on the lake; however, there are many good sites and they still had some openings on Friday. We have a 29' pop-up tent trailer and took advantage of their water/electric sites. Each site in the park has a fire ring and picnic table. The sites on the lake are very deep - from RV camping to the cabin sites. There are cabins available as well as tent and primitive camping. The restrooms were SPOTLESS with nice shower areas (private locking stalls with a dressing area in each). There are nice public spaces - lots of picnic areas, a great swimming beach with a platform, excellent lit fishing pier, basketball goal and playground. There is also a stocked trout pond down a hiking trail. The Ranger staff are really nice. You don't need to bring any firewood. They provide it (for a donation) at the park. (They have a small shop that also sells ice.) We will definitely be back. This park is not far from Pittsburg. It's a really cute quaint little town that you won't want to miss either.
The park is very clean as well as the restrooms and showers (probably the cleanest state park I have ever been to). The staff is VERY friendly and accommodating and go above and beyond. We rented a screened shelter for the weekend which was nice but they have screened shelters with amenities (AC unit, bunk beds) which is what we will be getting next time. We went hiking, swimming and did some fishing; unfortunately we did not catch anything but everyone else around us caught Bass and Catfish. All in all it was a great trip and we will most definitely be back soon.
We stayed in one of the screened shelters for three days on the Fourth of July weekend. Due to a miscommunication about the family sleeping arrangements, we didn't have a reservation. All the shelters in the park were reserved for the last two nights, but the very friendly Park Rangers helped us to find a screened shelter for the first night and then another screened shelter for the other two nights when there were some reservation cancellations. Both shelters were in great shape, and the screened shelters have glass windows that can be locked open or closed, so rain shouldn't be an issue. The screened shelters use the same showers/bathrooms as the cabins and we generally drove to the facilities. They were in very good shape and relatively clean given the number of people that were at the park that weekend. The park was a little noisy on the night of the 4th, even though fireworks aren't permitted in the park. It didn't go too late, so it wasn't too bad.The lake was very full, so the swim beach had water up to the retaining wall. There is a nice pier and wide steps that help to get into and out of the water and plenty of trees in the grass in front of the swimming area. Our grandkids spent most of the afternoon in the water, swimming and jumping from the swimming platform about 50 feet from shower. The water was cool and we all had a great time.We plan on returning in the future and I would say that the very friendly park staff is a major reason we will be going back.
I stayed in a screened shelter for one night - price was right ($25/night) but it was warm for sure. The rangers at the front office were so very nice - one even let me use her phone to call my husband and let him know where I was (because my cell phone had no service). I took a short hike on one of the trails, then settled in to my shelter, which was right on the water. It was perfect for what I needed - it was screened in, with electricity, and a spigot outside with potable water. The bathrooms were clean, and the cold shower felt good!
This state park did not disappoint! The screened shelter we stayed in with a/c was clean and cool. Camp area had a nice fire pit and water access table and grill. Beautiful park very well maintained. Cleanest Camp restrooms I have ever seen. Park personnel were extremely friendly and helpful. This is a place we will visit again often!
This beautiful lake should not be overlooked! It is quiet and peaceful but still big enough for water sports and fishing.
Nice park where I stopped for a picnic lunch and to walk my dog. Checked out the bathrooms and they look to be renovated.
This is a beautiful lake and the tent and RV campsites are spacious and well treed. This park has become one of our favorite places for camping. It has a great fishing pier and pond along with a good swimming area for the kids. Everything about this park is clean.
It was best trip to Pittsburg because of my stay at the Lavender Mermaid Farm B&B. The area around Pittsburg is beautiful as is the downtown are with the small shops and museums.
We have stayed in this park three times. We drive 175 miles, bypass other parks to come here. Always very clean, campsites and restrooms. We strongly recommend this park. Every site has something good about it. Looking forward to November 2013, plan to spend full week there. I would give the staff an A+.
Did you know you could fish for free at any state park in Texas? We didn't - and we had a ball! The park rangers were very pleasant and helpful and the park itself was very well kept.
We were on our way home and needed a place to spend the night and were very pleased with the park. It was about 12 miles off of I-30, but the signage led us straight to it. The staff at headquarters was very friendly. We arrived around 4:45 p.m. and she had us drive around and select a campsite for our travel trailer and then pay on the way out the next day. (Of course, this may not work during the peak summer season.) We stayed at site #3. There is a hiking trail between sites 5 & 6 that was truly delightful during early April. The dogwoods and wisteria were blooming and it was a beautiful, fragrant hike, not to be missed. The restrooms were just a short walk away and were spotless and looked brand new. We would definitely stay there again.
Just returned from Park and it was a great experience. This was out 3rd year of attending the BSA Troop 1020 Polar Bear Camp out held at the park. The Ranger's and support staff could not be a nicer bunch of people. There were about 35 Scouts plus family members so we had a large group there. Park is quiet and we had our loop to ourselves.
