This museum contains mostly travelling exhibits. They are quirky, original and mostly modern art. The small entrance fee makes it all worthwhile, and there is a good panoramic view available from the second floor terrace.
On a recent girl friends trip to San Angelo we visited The San Angelo Museum of fine Arts. The museum is small compared to others that I have visited in larger cities but it has found a niche by focusing on ceramic exhibits and competitions. We visited just after one of the competitions and all the entries were still on exhibit. We saw many different and unique ways to use ceramics in the art world. One item in particular was a full body figure of a senior woman in ballet attire....it was totally amazing and mesmerizing. The gift shop is small but has some interesting items. The volunteer staff are friendly and helpful. The building itself is interesting to see as well as the art work installed outside. A visit to this engaging art museum is certainly worth the time.
A beautiful place, with added special events such as lectures and free admission and snacks when they change major exhibits-love the whole area! Go on the 3rd Th.evening of the month and enjoy all the downtown area art with free transportation or walk!
The building is the shape of a saddle and has beautiful mesquite wood floors. The grounds are pretty and it is on the Concho River.
Its not huge, you won't find any world renown artists here. But its a very cool unique building in a beautiful setting and they offer some great exhibits occasionally. Its definitely worth the trip, great little small town museum.
I took my grandson to see what the fine arts museum of San Angelo had to offer. I had to smile while my grandson looked and examined every piece of art and sculpter there was to view. It was a great visit. We all learned a lot that day
This is a very nice center to visit and is very representative of San Angelo. The building is very beautiful and is a great atmosphere for the exhibits. The exhibits vary on a monthly or so basis.I took my 5 year old granddaughter here and she loved all the colors she saw. This is a great place to introduce kids to the arts.If you are visiting San Angelo, you must visit here. I believe most people can enjoy it in about an hour. Other people who are art intelligent might want to spend longer.
Over the past few years I have made several trips to visit this museum. I won't be going again. Only once was there an exhibition I consider to be fine art. That was two years ago. Yesterday I visited again hoping to see something exciting. I found three galleries filled with pottery and painted tiles. Only one piece seemed worthwhile to me. It was a large bowl by Lisa Orr who lives in Austin,Texas. The others looked like folk art that can be found in any market or festival in cities like San Antonio and Dallas. I know there is a controversy whether works in pottery and photography can be called "fine art" in the traditional way. Only time will decide. Maybe not until these pieces become artifacts. I consider them to be works of craftsmen with skills in technology. I suppose potters do use some form of sculptor but not when molds are the norm. Studio pottery and earthenware hold little interest for me. Only once have I seen painting or drawings at this museum. The price was right. Seniors $1 and adults $2. The workers were lacking. I kept trying to engage in conversation the woman who was guarding my every move. I addressed her as "docent" and she quickly told me she was not a docent and knew nothing.
The current exhibit of Texan art is very enjoyable. The displays and background of the artists enhance the experience.
From the size of the building, you expect a lot more than what's in there. There are only two or three galleries and the rest is event space. Also, the permanent collection really leaves something to be desired. But to their credit, they do have really interesting exhibits from time to time. If you pay attention to the schedule, you can get in for an occasional treat.
The wonderful staff was so accomodating for my niece'e wedding The wedding was outside, along the beautiful Rio Concho river. I was very impressed.
It's a nice little cultural gem in San Angelo. They have travelling exhibits and concerts as well. The building design fits in with the local culture.
Such a pretty building, surrounded by nice grounds. A little gem here in San Angelo. Very nice exhibits inside: paintings, sculpture, etc. Building looks big but exhibit area seems kind of small. It did not take us long to look--but that's a good thing when you have a 4-yr old with you. I go there 3-4 times per year.
This museum has a fine permanent collection of ceramics, but also hosts traveling exhibitions occasionally.
I've got to hand it to the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts. I've been there quite a number of times throughout the years and they're one of the best at rotating pieces and switching up inventory. Nothing is more discouraging to repeat museum goes and art lovers than seeing the same old, same old. While the number of pieces is somewhat limited considering the amount of space they have to work with (which is why they don't get 5 stars from me), the direction that the museum seems to be pointed in is ideal. I'm very pleased with the exhibits that come through SAMFA, because a lot of the time they're very unexpected. Truly a diamond in the rough and a cultural beacon in this one horse town.
