I attended a bilingual service here complete with mariachi band. The most unique experience i could ever have. I hope when you are here you partake
We came to Weslaco, TX for a funeral and I did a promesa at the Basilica. This Basilica inspires awe and is beautiful. Their gift shop is fabulous, the grounds are wonderful. They also have hotel rooms for those who wish to stay on the grounds. You will NEVER be disappointed.
From Dallas, Texas, we drove more than 500 miles just to see this church. My family said that Our Lady of San Juan Del Valle is miraculous. This church is so clean and well-maintained. There is ample parking space and clean restrooms. At the back of the church, there are statues of saints, mama Mary and Jesus Christ and here is also different mementos left by devotees. On the other side of the church is a gift shop where you can buy candles, religious articles and statues and paintings of saints. I am lucky to have been in this place.
I love to stop by the Basilica when I'm in the Valley. It's the most wonderful place to have an encounter with the Holy Spirit. They offer mass several times a day as well as confessions and the Liturgy of the Hours.
I couldn't find the Basilica Hotel listed in Tripadvisor so I thought I'd write this review under the Basilica Shrine. My husband and in laws stayed at the Basilica Hotel. The rooms are just that - rooms. There's nothing spectacular or outstanding about these rooms except for the location and price. It's very convenient to the Shrine (new and old) and gift shop. Rooms have a chair and tv with a private restroom with low access shower stall but they DO NOT come with a hair dryer or coffee maker. However, there is a cafeteria on the premises, connected to the hotel. But you have to pay for your meal, they are not complimentary and do not come with your room. We'll be staying here again in the future.
Our family was so blessed after we found out and visited this miracle land back in 26 years ago. Since then, every year, every other year, or sometime twice a year, we went back to thank, pray and visit. The origins of the devotion to Our Lady of San Juan del Valle are found in San Juan de los Lagos, Mexico where the first miracle happened in 1623 when the young girl was killed and got back to life by the Church caretaker begged her parents to place the image of the Virgin Mary over her body and prayed.... The second one was happened in Oct.1970, at the older Shrine, here, in San Juan, Texas, USA., when a small low-flying plane crashed into the roof of it, exploded into flames, destroyed very much the entire Shrine... while 50 priests were celebrating Mass with about 80 people in attendance and about 100 school children in cafeteria.... but no one was hurt or died in the tragedy!!! The pilot was the only fatality. The new Shrine was completed in 1980. It's huge and beautiful, on the large piece of land. Weekend and Holiday Masses are always crowded. Before you come to visit, you should check its Website for better directions, Mass schedules(some by Spanish and some by bi-lingual), find out more about its amazing stories.... The Masses are so awesome with the music from a nice costume Mariachi Group, with all kind of instruments will filled the entire church. This huge property had a nice Gift Shop, a like Hotel with clean/no smoking rooms for overnight stay, Cafeteria, free tour Bus parking, the remain of the old Shrine Site in the back of property for visiting, a fountain with faucets for Holy Water.... It's located right in the Rio Grande Valley, by Freeway 83, between Mc Allen and Harlingen, right by the Border of Mexico and US. Well known South Padre Island Beaches and City of Brownsville and Matamoros are not far away... This Shrine drawn people from all over the world, not just for Catholic Christians only. You should visit during Special Events, Holiday Masses... its decorated so beautiful, great music... It will little crowded but it's worth to visit. Have a bless and great time here!
Attended Sunday Mass at this amazingly beautiful National Basilica. Architecture, culturally attractive in the tradition of the Spanish people. Atmosphere was most welcoming, priest and liturgy inspirational. This is not a dull event. The music of the mariachi group of nine musicians filled the space and set the tone for the festive service. Violins, trumpets, guitars, mandolin and singers dressed in seasonal attire were exceptionally talented. I live in New England and our services are mostly serious and not very interactive. So when in the Rio Grande Valley visiiting the south Western United States....and want a taste of authentic Catholic Spanish .....get your spiritual energy for the day here.
I love to go to a local church and Mass when traveling. The Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan Del Valle is a beautiful building with well maintained grounds. The Mass is traditional, except for an incredible group of Mariachi. Before you say, "you have got to be kidding me," seek this place out. I don't go to Mass to be entertained, but even the most Catholic purist will be blown away.
Food for the soul....There are places that you visit during your life that leave you with that good, peaceful feeling. The Basilica of San Juan is one of those places. Christians of all denominations would feel good after visiting here. My soul feels refreshed when I leave this place. Before you visit, you might want to read up on the history behind the building of the Basilicahttp://www.olsjbasilica.org/about-us/historyThe grounds contain a large church, gift shop, rooms for overnight stays, faucets for holy water and other religious buildings. Services are very crowded but very good. We will return.
A humbling experience after having visited this gorgeous and powerful place. My mom was very moved when she walked in, as this is where she made many childhood memories. The energy inside this place is very holy and good, it's vastness and majestic appeal is really felt. I'm not a religious person but you don't have to be in order to appreciate this location.
My husband and I visited the Basilica of Our lady of San Juan del Valle. In the morning we took a walk around the 3/4 mile grounds looking at the 14 Stations of the Cross. The figures are life size are bronze. The history of the church dates back to 1623 when a little girl died and she was brought back to life with the miracle of prayers. Behind the alter is large 3 dimensional, beautiful sculpture along with a room off to the side with historical artifacts and information. The Mariachi Band which played at the Mass we attended Saturday evening was fabulous! What an experience to listen and sing along with professional musicians. After the Mass the priest blessed any religious articles which we had on us. Religious articles could have also be purchased at the large gift shop on the grounds.
