Unfortunately this great place closed in 2012 shortly after Southlake voted down a bill that would've allowed the sale of hard liquor within the city. I believe the owners were primary proponents for passing that bill.
Sadly, Farpointe Cellars closed in January of 2012.
We have often shopped at Farpointe for many types of wine, and the guys in the bottle shop are friendly and knowledgeable. They have often offered (and we accepted) the "instant chiller" they have on premises to chill down a bottle of champagne/dessert or white when we were bringing it immediately to an event. The prices are mostly reasonable, and they offer a purchase discount on a case or more. It is fun to do some tastings with them when they have bottles open on the weekends inside the store. The wine bar is a different story. We have tried it few times now - once for a glass or two with friends, sometimes for a special tasting being offered, and three or four times to do flight tastings. The staff here has no knowledge of wine whatsoever. They are not friendly (to us and our friends at least), and we often find ourselves sitting for long stretches of time with no wine and/or no food. I believe there must be a group of locals who come here often and/or are friends of the staff, because the staff almost always spends all their time, attention and pours at one table. In one instance, we noticed flights being generously poured at the table next to us with lots of chatty banter, but when we finally got the staff's attention, we barely got the name of the wine and the standard stopper pour. I am saddened by this service every time we go because we REALLY want to like this wine bar. They often have interesting wines on the pour list (And yes, for those concerned about my wine-snobbery knowledge level, I DO know something about wine - we used to live in the Napa Valley), it is really close to our home and we love the guys next door. Please, please get some knowledgable, friendly staff for the wine-bar.
Like any place the service can be hit or miss. Usually the staff in the wine bar are fairly friendly - mostly with the regulars. They may or may not be as knowledgeable as the guys in the retail section but the one thing Farpointe has going for it is the selection - not a huge selection, but I've never had a bad wine there. They know how to choose 'em.
Most so-called "Wine Bars" sell you grocery store swill for $10 a glass, but not this place! We did the weekend tasting - Champagne and Cabernet. I had a flight of Cabernet - 5 tastes at 2oz each for $20, with the wines ranging from $20 to $60 a bottle at the shop next door - every wine was terrific. My wife did the Champagne flight with equally satisfying results. Throw in a cheese platter, and we were so full we decided to skip dinner. Overall a great experience for the price, and we'll definitely be back."I skimmed the reviews below and am not sure what "dynaman" and "robin06" look for in a wine bar, but this place had it all - service, atmosphere and top-flight wines. Maybe they are just not used to higher-quality wines. They should probably stick with the Texas wines that they are used to...
Their weekly wine tastings are terrifiic. How terrific? I drive over an hour to taste at Farpointe rather than the numerous much closer veneus.Honestly, the store has a broad range of prices and wine styles, and they will track down that obscure bottle your friend told you about. The wine bar is staffed with knowledgeable people who can help you choose what you might like to explore, recommend a tasting flight, or give you some privacy if you prefer. After a couple of visits they remember your name as well as your wine preferences. There may be a better wine bar - but I haven't found one.
I've been going to Farpointe for a couple of years now, and it has rarely disappointed. The store has a wide selection of wines, many of which you won't find at other wine specialty stores. The staff is a knowledgeable collection of people who truly enjoy wines and are happy to listen to what your tastes are and point you to some treasures you might have otherwise overlooked. The bistro has a solid list of menu wines available throughout the week, along with snack sized dishes of cheeses, meats and other selections. The real fun is on the weekends, though. Every weekend they offer three different flights: two flights of five wines, and one "bonus" flight of higher end wines, usually all following a weekly theme. Wineries and winemakers regularly visit the bistro during the week when they feature flights of their wines and special prices, and on Thursday nights they have "BYOP", bring your own pizza night with bottle discounts. It's worth getting on their email list to find out what special events are coming up. Their patio area is a popular spot to enjoy nice weather and some good wines. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, managed by a certified sommelier.
My husband and I love Farpointe. The wine selection is amazing, the staff is like family, and the food portions for the price are out of this world. You really get the feeling of "Cheers" when you walk into Farpointe. The staff knows you by name and always remembers your favorite glass of wine, and are always more than helpful and willing to go out of their way to make each and every experience more wonderful than the last. We recommend Farpointe to all of our friends and family.
I'm not sure what wine bistro some of these reviewers were at, but it certainly isn't the Farpointe I have enjoyed for over two years. The flights are generous. The staff if young, friendly and knowledgable. A single women can come in alone and feel safe and welcome. This is, and will continue to be, why first choice when I think of a wine experience.
I read both reviews and thought maybe this place had gotten its act together and improved from the review in 2007. I was wrong. Staff was very unfriendly and wine on their flights were bad. The two of us each chose a different flight so we could try twice the wine. Out of the 10 SMALL samples we were given for $20. none were worth a second full glass even if it were free. With so many good wineries in Grapevine area it is no wonder this place was almost empty. Will not be on my list to every go back or suggest anyone else to go there.
Visit Farpointe, the store has a very large selection of very unique wines from all over the world. The staff is very knowledgeable (my favorites are Trey and Simon) and can help you find the wine that you are looking for, even if you are not really sure what that is. I can always go in there with a fairly broad description and they will find exactly what I want. I also enjoy going to the bar next door they do fun moderately priced tastings that are $20 a flight and you get 5 wines which change from week to week and are always unique. The staff in the bar is inviting and like you to feel at home (kind of like the local 'Cheers' ) and have a pretty good knowledge of wine as well. Their regular menu is also something to check out if you are not into tastings. They have a pretty large selections of wines by the glass and from what I have gathered are marked up only 30% to 40% and if you want a bottle from the store they will go get it and charge you a low corkage fee. Its one of my weekly rituals and I hope you love it as much as I do.
I have been to several wine tasting locations in Texas and almost all of them in Grapevine. When I saw this location I was excited to try another one. When entering the decor looked ok, but the staff seemed stuffy and somewhat rude, not what I expected. Normally the attitude in this area is helpful and very friendly. NOT HERE. Although the price for 5 shot sized tastings was $15, listed were wines they said were premium wines and we thought we would go ahead and try them. They have 2 flights, or listings, and were suggested to try each so we could taste 10 wines. We agreeded and started tasting. Not one of the ten pourings were decient. Neither of us would have wanted a free pouring of any of them, much less the 6-18 dollars per glass they wanted to charge. Some of the wines were so bad we left some of the shot sized pouring in the glass. The server started to pour the next wine into the same glass without even pouring out the unwanted wine from the previous selection. Only when we demanded the glass washed did they do so showing an attitude of disgust from the hassle. Most tasting rooms are helpful, have crackers to clean you pallet after each wine and chocolate to enhance the flavor of some wines. Here everything was for an extra charge. It is apparent they are here for the dollar. There are other places to chose from that really want to help you find a wine to your liking. I suggest not chosing this one.
