Just got back from the third time to the cabins at Cooper Lake and we enjoyed it very much and it was very quiet and relaxing. One thing is some cell phones will not work here. My phone would send text only and wouldn't go online. That wasn't a problem. Its very very clean and the cabins are great! If you have someone that will be sleeping on the couch in the livingroom best to take your own linens. Cabin number two and three have the best lake view and cabin 13 is slightly farther back up in the edge of the woods. Deer all over. Great for kids. The hiking trails are very clean but when it says it takes two hours to complete the coyote trail they mean it! lol! take lots of bottled water. Just a perfect place to stay. We did not fish so I cant say on that but if you just want to get away for a weekend alone and unplug this is the place and the price is awesome for the cabins.
wanted to go someplace different, and found the most wonderful place, Cooper Lake South Sulfur Unit. Stayed 2 nights and had a wonderful time. we had a screened in shelter which was very nice, everyone there was so nice, if we needed something they were there to help. we had rain comming in on the night we got there, there are no hooks for tarps, so bring some gorrilla tape. (that stuff rocks), i called them to bring us a ladder, and they came right away. Bathrooms were nice as well. I highly recommend this as a nice getaway. Please do come and enjoy!!!!!!
We took our 2 year old grandson and we had a great time. We fished, played at the playground, took walks and the best thing was no tv.
We stayed in one of their cabins This place is terrible the water is nasty nothing is kept up it is all very dirty
Stayed there for 2 nights. Rented 2 cabins, we were 10 people, and each cabin sleeps 6. There are beds for 4, and 2 have to sleep on a futon; although it is better to just pull down the mattress on the floor and make yourself comfortable rather than having a sore back. Park is clean and nice. However, we visited at the end of fall, and most of the trees had already shed, so not a pretty picture there. Being able to do a bonfire was an added advantage. They also provide patio grill for cooking. There is also a convenient store 4 miles out to get something in case you forgot to pack for it; beware the nearest Walmart is almost 30 miles. Overall, nice and inexpensive place to relax. Also, even though you rent cabins, there is a per person fee per day to visit the park.
We camp here often in our 5th wheel. The sites are large and the pads are concrete. Each one with a table & grill, come have covers over the tables. The Bathrooms are always clean, and firewood is available at the host site for a donation. I don't recommend boating sports here. The lake is continuously low and even when full, there are trees just below the surface. Fishing is fine, but tubing or skiing may be dangerous. Don't come here expecting to enjoy the water. Dallas is pulling water out of it and the swimming area is useless as are fishing piers and at most times you cannot use the boat ramps in the park. This saddened us local users. It really affected the park. There are multiple camping areas and a nice day use area. There is a nice equestrian camp & ride area that is off limits unless you have a horse. There is also a good hiking trail in Day use. We always enjoy it here, even though we can no longer use the boat.Well, unless the boy scouts are camping here, then it's loud.
Dallas area is pulling all the water out of Cooper lake at this time so you cannot get access to the Lake in many places. A later visit would be much more enjoyable.
While the state park camp sites and facilities are very nice, I cannot give this park a high score. We booked our trip in order to enjoy fishing on the lake and swimming on a hot weekend. The Park website shows a great picture from a fishing pier and when we arrived the park staff told us we could access the lake from the back of our campsite. Once we were set up, we walked down the trail to the lake, only to find the lake a good quarter of a mile from the edge of the woods. It was inaccessible due to brush. We then went to the fishing piers and they looked like they had been on dry land for a period of months, if not a year. The swimming area was also closed. If you are going to go to this Park, I would suggest you check the lake levels in advance if you want to access the lake. The Park staff indicated that the low lake level is due to the drought, but I did a little research and it seems like this lake has pretty much had lake level problems since 2006 due to pumping to the DFW area.
If you enjoy camping or staying in cabins for a relaxing weekend this is your place .Connect with nature and fishing, hiking trails.Well kept. Water is low from over consumption by Dallas area cities.
We love Cooper Lake state park! We camp there many times per year. They keep everything very clean. There are numerous camp site with shade, and most are pretty level for parking your trailer. The boat ramps are great, unfortunately the big cities suck so much water out of the lake that it is usually about 10' low. We consistently see deer from sunset to dark, sometimes as many as 30 in one drive through the park.
Out standing facilities, well kept. Great beach for swimming. Rangers are friendly and helpful. Park is very clean with good roads and great boat ramps.
We stayed in Cabin #13, which several different rangers noted was their favorite one with the best view, set back from the others, etc. When we arrived the cabin was exceptionally clean and tidy. We found the cabin had plenty of room for 2 adults, The bathroom was very large, only complaint there was the towels are rough and thin (bring your own if that matters to you). Couch was comfortable. There is a single bedroom with two queen beds, linens were nice, two extra blankets provided, and there was a small open armoire with plenty of room to allow us to unpack. We stayed for a week to fish. The back porch had door from living room and the bedroom. Nice size picnic table and charcoal grill. Behind the cabin was a fire ring on the walk to the lake, and when we arrived there was a small set of cut firewood waiting to be used. The rangers were extremely nice and very helpful the entire stay. The lake water level was down while we were there, but the views were all still pleasant and two of the three fishing piers were still serviceable. Each pier area has lighted fish cleaning areas as well, and bathroom facilities near all the piers. We did not hike so cannot answer as to the trails but enjoyed ourselves fishing all week. The park was very quiet, and well maintained overall. We really enjoyed our stay in the cabin.
The main state texas 800# had told me the cabins were 2 bedrooms & had a gas grill on the patio. When we arrived, it was 2 queen beds in one room. And the couch in the living room didnt pull out. They charged extra ($10) a night for the 5th person to sleep in the living room, and they said they provided linens but there was NONE for the person on the couch. If i would stay here again, I'd Bring an air mattress for 5th person & linens. There was nice hiking, rangers were nice. nice lakeview. Its nice for families but for couples, better each book own cabin. Some in group did not have cell service once we left sulpher springs. The grills on the patio are charcoal, not gas. It was an ok park for hiking. If we lived closer perhaps I'd come back, but its not spectacular so will try another park next time.
The swimming area looked more like an industrial accident. Does not look healthy or safe. The park is in decent shape, but not a good place to swim.
