We figured we'd go there and have lunch there and they are closed during lunch. Their hours are quite limited.
The north visitor center of Big Bend National Park is at Persimmons Gap. It is always staffed by very knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly personnel. If you just ask the routine entrance questions you will miss some really good advice. There are a lot of hidden gems in the park, and they are willling to share them with you. the museum is small, but gives a great introduction to the Park. There are a couple of hands on items for the kids to touch, and interesting for adults as well.If you are into an easy hike, one of the best hikes is across the road, the Persimmons Gap Trail. it takes you up a long draw and features the most diverse and oldest rocks in the Park. if you persist to the very top, you might be treated to seeing Texas Big Horn sheep.Don't rush this one. Spend a little leisure time to ask a lot of questions and the attendants will help you maximise experience time instead of windshield time. i would suggest you read the literature they give you as it will prompt questions that will lead you to some of the parks attractions. Remember, the park is so vast you will not live long enought to see everthing. So use this stop for your advantage.
