The price is vary fare, the Planes and hands on items are easy to use to teach others what its like to serve in the military
This was such a treat to visit. They have a huge gift shop with many items from books to shirts. Parking is free and the employees were extremely friendly. I originally went to see FiFi, who had been restored there, but found out that it was no longer the permanent home for it. That is okay though because there were many many other planes to see. The best part if the entire museum is the noseart gallery. No photography is allowed, understandably, but wow what an experience it was! It truly felt like a step back in time.
When we were there this was headquarters for the Commemorative Air Force. In the building are mostly trainers from WW-II and immediately later. Outside one has a Phantom II and a Hudson and others I hurried past as it was about to rain. There is a bombardier training exhibit with early simulator as well as a LINK trainer for pilots. One exhibit is about Soviet contributions to the Spanish civil War and the Polikarpov is there. Some large radial engines with dusty decaying captions. I've had my time with these making 3D digital models so each additional exhibit just confirms or denys some specific model number in details. Stromberg ADI carburetor? check centrifugal supercharger check two row PWA vs one row Wright in WW-II bombers check (1830 ci vs 1820 ci) Still good on a C-47?
Visited CAF on Airsho weekend. Great displays and fantastic airshow. Easy access and parking. Plenty to see even on non-flying days.
See a lot of old WW2 planes and some interesting nose art from some of the old bombers. The exhibits were easy to see and were the real thing.
I'm not sure why this is listed as the American Airpower Heritage Museum as it is the headquarters of the Commemorative Air Force. This place is amazing as it has a hanger of restored and restorable planes including some undergoing restoration, an amazing collection of WW II bomber "Nose Art" and an entire museum devoted to the timeline of World War 2. It really is an informative and interesting place. We were also able to see their B-29 Flying Fortress as it undergoing a routine maintenance at the time. This place will be moving to Dallas in the near future so I suggest that you see it now. The staff is friendly and helpful, the grounds are amazing, and the place is extremely educational. They have a memorial garden and outdoor chapel that are available for weddings and such. Thanks to Director Randy Wilson for making our visit special.
As with so many aviation museums we visited on our trip, as well as over the years, there were few visitors, which is sad, as this museum has a lot to offer. This venue doubles as the location of the Commemorative Air Force headquarters and its actual name, on the entrance door at least, is the CAF Airpower Museum. That aside, there is a fine display of aircraft, many of which are privately owned and fly at various shows around the country. Patrons may see a different display on subsequent visits. Just inside was one of my favorites, a Soviet Polikarpov I-16 fighter. No one, except the person selling admissions, was around, so we ventured outdoors and photographed the operational MiG-17 and other aircraft parked out there. I could have dragged the MiG home and no one would have seen. There is a very nice collection of WWII nose art, but photography is not allowed in that room because of copyright restrictions, which I found odd. Visitors also should not miss some of the WWII combat "briefings" and films. Outdoors is an open-air chapel and memorial garden both to lost vets and to CAF pilots who have been killed in accidents. Finally, look for the plaque devoted to LCol Lee A. Archer, USAF, Retired, a Tuskegee Airman and member of the American Combat Airmen Hall of Fame. Having met a few of these "men in red blazers" over the years, it is good to see the "Red Tails" receiving the recognition they so rightly deserve. Their numbers are dwindling rapidly.
We went out of our way to go to this museum. They have a good selection of aircraft in their hangar, nice exhibit of nose art and lots of history to read about. The WWII exhibit is very well done. You won't be disappointed.
This museum has been a source of pride for Midlanders since it moved here from South Texas. It is professionally done with good displays, although it probably needs some refurbishing. If you have any interest at all in WWII history, you should visit. The CAF administrators have turned their backs on the community and could move the facility at any time, so see it as soon as you can!
I am a life long aviation fan and Aeronautical Engineer. Visiting this collection had been an ambition for some time and,to be honest, I was very disappointed. The Duxford collection in the UK is 10 times better. Perhaps the most unusual exhibit and best part was the nose art.
Want to see some of the real aircraft that won WWII for us as well as German and Japanese aircraft? The American Airpower Heritage Museum or Commemorative Air Force Museum and Aircraft Display is the place. Suitable for children, teens and yes, adults.
If you appreciate WWII or military aircraft restoration this is a must see. They have varied aircraft that have had excellent restorations. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the Museum.
Lots of good displays. Not that many static displays. Could use more planes to see. Displays on WWII were good and informative. Best displays were at the SAC museum at Omaha.
I can't really say much more than what's already been said in the other reviews here. It's all covered pretty well here. So, I'll just mention it's free parking, lots of parking, and it's not close to any food or shopping. I can't write this without mentioning a really cool motorcycle scooter and helicopter they have there. So, here's some photos.
I've been to the musuem many times. While some of the displays remain the same, they are very good at adding new displays to the mix. The panes you see vary each time as they rotate in and out to their "home bases". The actual nose art from WWII planes is great. The staff is very firendly and helpful. Their annual air show is amazing.
