To begin - if I could give this museum a 10, I would do it. I visited today (9/18) and I absolutely loved it. It is a museum about the railway system in one of the old stops - Plano. It's very authentic. The museum has a large train showing you what it looked like rolling through the now busy downtown Plano area. It's crazy to think that there was a new thing going through North Texas and that was this train - from Denison to Corsicana, Denton to Terrell, and more. The museum tells you about what the area was, what was going on in society and why it needed this, how the system began, the engineering behind it, and how it came to an end. Yet, now DART is in the area, but not as widespread. It's very interesting that the area has done a big circle back to what was once there. There is a lot of interactive things to help you learn about how it all works. I liked the artifacts, the documents, and altogether the setup. It's very informative and I never knew almost any of the information. It was eye opening. My favorite thing about the whole visit is the staff. This museum is extremely well maintained. A gentleman and founder of the museum, greeted us as we entered. He was very kind and answered our handfuls of questions. He showed us how a lot of things worked, gave us more information, and really led us to how to enjoy the museum the best. He is extremely knowledgeable about the information and a plethora of other topics. His guidance and knowledge made the museum a lot more enjoyable than I thought it was going to be. It was a very, very pleasant surprise.
I guess the reviewers below were not local history buffs or train enthusiasts because I really enjoyed my visit to this museum. The museum is located near downtown Plano, in the only restored electric sub-station building from the Interurban line. It tells the history of the Texas Electric Railway, which carried passengers from Denison to Dallas, south to Waco, west to Ft. Worth, and all points between from 1908 to 1948. The displays are very well-done and I really enjoyed the old photographs. Rail Car 360, manufactured in 1911 and in the process of restoration, stands next to the building and is available for tours by the friendly and knowledgeable docents. There is an interesting side room for kids to learn about electricity with a number of hands-on exhibits, but the museum appears to be aimed at adult visitors interested in Plano history and rail transportation. My visit lasted about an hour, including the rail car tour, and I found it educational and fun. There is no admission fee, but a small donation is appreciated.
Thank you for your visit to the Interurban Railway Museum! We are glad you enjoyed your visit and hope you will visit us again soon!
Many kids today have never ridden on a train and may never have the opportunity to ride one in the future.Only a few trans come through Dallas each week and seeing one of the Amtrak trains is not a common sift. This is a small park in downtown Plano and is the perfect place to spend some time downtown browsing and dining and just across the Dart tracks is this neat little park. I have always found the area to be well kept. This can be both an educational as well as adventure for the kids.
not a huge museum, but kids liked going throughthe exhibit and looking at the train. dont expect much and this is just for you
We are so glad that you enjoyed your visit! Please come see us again soon, and bring your friends! :)
We are so pleased that you enjoyed your visit to the Interurban Railway Museum! Your grandmother sounds like she might be a great person for us to talk to for our "Tell Us Your Story" oral history project - we are collecting stories from those who rode the Interurban Railway between 1908 and 1948. If you're interested in learning more, please email us at planoconservancy@earthlink.net.
It's a small local museum. Interesting interurban story. Careful or you could miss it as you drive by...
Thank you for your kind review! We are so glad you enjoyed the museum. Parents and grandparents, please note we have a free children's story time each Friday at 10:30 a.m. - just one more reason to visit the museum!
This is a wonderful little musuem in a converted substation that tells the history of the Texas Electric Railway and how it helped the economic development of the area. With the rise of the freeways it eventually closed and has been forgotten by all but railroad history buffs. Photos and artifacts explaing the founding of the line, it's success, management turmoil, and the eventual decline and closing. A beautifully restored trolley car is outside. The museum is free, but hours are limited so check the website. It is located next to the Downtown Plano stop on the DART light rail - certainly the appropriate way to arrive.
