The last time I went to Messina Hof was almost thirty years ago. They have not always had the best reputation for wines. I was skeptical about stopping at the nicely appointed newer tasting room east of Fburg. I am glad I did. Their wines have grown up. They had about forty wines from which to choose. And they were reasonably priced. When I go again in the future, I may even be tempted to join the wine club.
First and foremost, the wine is excellent! There is a good variety of both reds and whites, something for just about anyone at multiple levels of wine enthusiasm. The location is very sharp and clean with some fun cabins in the back which can be reserved. The staff is knowledgeable but a bit focused on work rather than the patrons. Not to say they did not take care of our needs, but they were more focused on stocking and other chores of the day. Definitely stop in for a good glass of wine. We will definitely visit again.
This was our last stop of the day and the bar had been set very high by our previous stops. The staff was the friendliest of all that we encountered and the facility is beautiful.
We stopped in here while visiting Fredericksburg and did their wine tasting. What a treat! Two of the nine in our group bought cases to take home. They had some really great selections.
We stopped here during a day trip to Fredericksburg to try someplace new, since we tend to do the same wineries over and over. The building is new, spacious and sunny inside with two separate patio areas and their small collection of B&B cottages located at a distance behind it. When we found out it was Happy Hour ($3.00 glasses), we opted against a tasting in favor of a couple of glasses of Pinot Grigio out on the patio. They did a steady business while we were there and all the servers were friendly. My only two complaints: It took a full ten minutes to get cashed out because there was an issue with one cash register. I looked around and saw at least two others not in use but, for some reason, they let everyone get backed up on the one. The second is much smaller, we were run out of one patio area by a stupid bee that refused to leave us alone. I heard a few others grumbling about bee problems as well. When we moved to the second patio area, problem solved.
My close girl friends and I went to celebrate my BFF turning 31! Stopped at some local wineries in town and absolutely feel in love with this winery! The staff was very helpful and funny, not to mention the WINE! It is so tasteful and believe me everyone in the party came home with a bottle! Not to bad in price $10 for 5 wine tasting, you keep the glass and you get tokens to use. My favorite is the "Glory" has a kick of brandy! Definitely will return!
We just returned from participating in our second annual grape harvest at the Messina Hof in Fredericksburg and had an amazing time. The picking of the grapes, then getting to stomp them was so much fun. We had a really good lunch and got to some wine tasting with Paul, the CEO and Winemaker of Messina Hof. Karen, his wife was also there and was an excellent hostess as well. All the staff that works there are exceptionally friendly and ready to help at any given moment. The wine is great and very affordable! Everyone should try this location and if you can participate in next year's harvest. I know we will be back!
Stopped in several times when I was last in the Hill Country of Texas. The first time to taste and the following times to buy. The reds are a great surprise and I managed to do some damage to my budget as the servers kept introducing me to new tastes. My server was very knowledgeable and listened to what I preferred coming back with just the right bottle. This is a dangerous stop as the wine is fine and the staff is friendly and engaging.
Messina Hoff has been around Texas a long time. I think there're the third oldest winery.Although the wine is crafted in Brian, TX the Guest Center is worth a stop.We found it to be the most generous pour of all the tastings we did. Mind you, we were there in off season and on a Monday, but the service and time spent with us was spectacular. Give them a try...
Bus barely rolled up and The rep that was in charge of serving our tour came on the bus and gave us all a stern warning of how to behave inside the winery and he came off really rude and quite a downer to our party bus. He kept this attitude inside while serving us and though the wine was good we all felt a bit uptight. When people book a wine tour it is usually to have fun with friends and if the winery staff is apprehensive about the groups they should asked to be removed from the tour.
A bit partial to Messina Hof but thought this tasting center was good. Raegan did a good job, knew her wine. Wasn't too busy. Had to spend a lot of effort keeping my wife from spending all of our money. Will go back.
It was okay I guess, but the server was snotty, the place was packed, you definitely got the feeling they were herding you around like cattle. There were definitely better places, you can skip this one.
We went on a weekday and enjoyed the attention while having our wine tastings. Friendly staff and nice wines at affordable prices. Be sure to stop at this little castle!
Almost skipped Messina Hof, and so happy we did not! Awesome service; awesome wine! Kathryn O'Sullivan was our most excellent server. She gave great suggestions for us based on our description of the type wine we enjoyed. We ended up purchasing six bottles -- and wanted far more!! The Almond Champagne, George W. Bush merlot, Cab Franc Reserve and Chenin Blanc were our favorites. WARNING: If you visit, you will buy! BUT... purchase will make the tasting (w/ glass) free. Highly recommend!
Have had Messina Hof wine bought retail and enjoy so stopped to see this location. The greeter was quick to tell us that this wine was not what they sell in stores. The wine they serve is higher end and reserve type wine. To me it sounded like she was "downing" Messina Hof store wine. We paid for one shared tasting and got a neat little glass with it. No one seemed to care if they waited on us to taste even though the place was not near as crowded as other wineries we visited in area on this afternoon. We did stand in front of a young man who finally somewhat acknowledged us. He was not at all friendly or interactive, even with us trying to carry on a conversation with him. He just poured the wine and went on about other stuff then would come back over to pour the next. He did not provide any input or information. We did ask a few questions that he replied to but nothing more than was required:( We ended up buying a bottle of wine just because we liked it. We debated whether we should since the service was not worth buying a bottle. Then the guy asks did we want our glass. Well Yes, we paid for it as part of the tasting, of course we wanted it:) DUH! The building is really nice and they do have a small outdoor seating area but it isn't the main focus and no one was sitting out there. Of course it was hot this day.
