Plan to arrive early in the morning and visit the aquarium as you walk in the main gate. All houses were excellent but often there are too many people to get up close and personal. Check the times for various openings. Just a great day even with many people!
We went early in morning. Very easy parking and easy to find. Lots of animals and very easy spend more than one day. Kids had fun. Come early to avoid parking nightmare.
We took advantage of the free first Tuesday. It's a pretty big zoo with a lot of animals. I think our favorite were the lions. They look really magnificent. We were disappointed that the Gorilla exhibit was closed. That will be neat to see. The giraffe's and rhino's were also cool to look at. Great field trip for the kids.
I loved this zoo! Took our 2 year old granddaughter, easy to navigate, not too large, were able to see most of the exhibits.
We intended to spend the morning at the zoo, then move on to some other things we wanted to do...wrong. We got there shortly after it opened and five hours later, we were finally finished. We don't have kids and we enjoy reading the information at each habitat, so it probably takes us a little longer than some others, or those with kids; however, the zoo is huge! I thought the price was a little steep when we got there, but after we finished for the day, the cost was totally worth it! Don't miss the primate exhibit, it is great! After you finish, the Japanese Garden is within walking distance of the zoo and is a great place to wind down.
I've been to this zoo dozens of times, and I would go back any chance I get! The animals are all kept in great conditions, and it's fun for the whole family. Lots of shade, lots of opportunities to get food and drinks throughout the day, and everything is run really well! There are several indoor exhibits if you get sick of the heat, but a lot of it is outside.
This is a beautifully run zoo that is almost overwhelmingly large! Wonderful habitats and a well maintained facility. A must see!
The Houston Zoo has a wonderful program on the first Tuesday of each month, September - May; the zoo is free to all guests from 12 n - closing!! Tickets are still required, so you will still go to the ticket booth and tell them the number of tickets you need; it is just that you do not have to pay on these Tuesdays. Make sure to get your free map of the zoo at the ticket booth as well. This free zoo day does make the parking lot fill up quickly, so be prepared that you just might have to walk a little bit to get to the main entrance. Overflow parking is across the street in the old parking lot for the Herman Park Golf Course, so you don't really have to walk too far.The entire Houston Zoo can easily be seen in 2 - 4 hours; a bit more if you want to take part in some of the 'zoo talks' presented by the caretakers. I particularly enjoyed the Primates section, as the zoo has wisely built platforms for viewing the various primates more on their level, since they are frequently up in the trees or on platforms / swings above the ground. I also really like how the Houston Zoo has made it a point to enclose the animals in natural settings, where feasible, vs. 'cages'. With these natural settings, one can frequently view the animals from the front or on the sides. Overall a pleasant day at the zoo without the heat and humidity that plagues Houston during the summer months. An added bonus is that many of the animals are more active during these cooler months as well.
I took my 8 year old grandson for a night at the zoo. He loved it. The event was extremely well run, and all the kids and adults had great fun.You don't have to be a member to do this, and you can schedule ahead if you are out of town. You arrive around 6 pm, have a little fun in the auditorium (we did animal charades), then have a pizza party (pizza, carrots, Famous Amos chocolate chip cookies, and lemonade). It was very good pizza. You can bring food or drinks of your choice to add to this if you wish.Afterwards, a 2 hour zoo tour goes by really fast, and seeing the animals at night is really different. One lioness was obviously fascinated with us, came up close, and stayed there so we got an extended view.Back to the education center for a craft while the adults set up bedding. There was everything from just a sleeping bag, to a very elaborate off the floor automatic blow up mattress. My grandson and I had sleeping bags on inexpensive blow up mattresses, and we were fine. Lights out about 10:30 - where did the time go?A 6 am wake-up call finds breakfast ready - great coffee, milk, juice, several different cereals, yogurt, and a variety of muffins. After breakfast we packed out things and then headed back outside to see the animals at the morning feeding, etc. Finally, we were back in the auditorium for an up close and personal visit with 3 animals. The chinchilla and Asian pet rooster were great, and I never thought I would touch an alligator, but I did. Of course, the kids took all this in stride. This was a great outing for a special treat with my grandson. There were girls and boys there, moms and dads, and of course, one grandmother.I thoroughly enjoyed it.Look into it if you live in the area, or if you are just visiting. You need an adult, but one adult can bring several kids. There was a birthday party group, and a scout troup. So it is a great way to do a group outing.
This was the first attraction my boyfriend and I made, and needless to say the most entertaining. We enjoyed the exhibits and the habitats for each animal, they seemed well adapted to the environment. The elephants are a must see as they provided us with a lovely spectacle. The babies were a delight!!!! The park was lovely and the landscaping was perfectly laid out and was just beautiful. The only downside to this visit was that due to future construction some of the exhibits were not available. Also due to the cold weather some of the animals were not allowing themselves to be seen lol I don't blame them though. We overall had a good time and was worth the money. Just sad to say the rest of the city was huge dissapointment.
The zoo was one of the best we have visited. Large variety of animals and the ability to be very close to elephants, cheetahs, lions, giraffes, etc...Hope the animals there are at the location because it is the best place for their specific needs. Its just sad to know that these animals, some of which have migratory patterns over hundreds of miles, are kept in a small area for viewing. As for cost, be prepared to spend around $60-$70 for a couple after entry fees and food/drinks.Something that did seem odd was the sale of alcohol at the zoo. Although we do enjoy adult beverages at times, it seemed unusual to mix families, small children, wild animals and alcohol...just saying seems like an accident and a lawsuit waiting to happen.
Going to the zoo has always been a joy to me. The facilities are well maintained, and the animals seem to be taken care of. The parking though is a little bit difficult. If going here during rush hour-5 PM- well..good luck!
This was a great Zoo! So well laid out, plenty of interaction with the animals (including feeding the giraffes), a lot of different types of animals, and even though it was a crowded day you didnt feel like it was overly crowded. Only down side is the parking. There isnt enough of it! Go around the back of the zoo and you may get lucky there for parking. We did! Overall if you like zoos this one is top notch!
So much fun. Every time we go. Our 3 year old loves to feed the giraffe. Go for a train ride it's always fun. Not a bad thing to say about this place. Fun fun fun
Like the giraffe exhibit the best. The elephants too. Wide variety of animals. They had wonderful Christmas lights during that season.
