I visited on President’s Day, a day when their audio guides were not available. I was very disappointed that I missed out on the opportunity to learn more in-depth information on the art pieces, since the descriptions were somewhat brief. I also found the layout and flow of the space to be lacking – there were few signs on where the collections were located on the campus, and no maps or directions anywhere. I found the building to be dreary, reminiscent of a physical sciences building on a university campus. It was hard to find the parking structure, and the whole experience was just not user friendly. The collection of European art was more limited and less interesting than other museums I’ve visited, such as the Getty Collection & Norton Simon museums in Los Angeles. I would pass on this museum if you have limited time in Houston, and check out other attractions that focus more on the visitor.
We enjoyed the free first Thursday of the month. There are many countries represented with their artwork. I enjoyed seeing the Monet, Manet, Van Gogh, and Renoir. It was well attended and we enjoyed our visit.
We attended the Monet exhibit with our teenaged nephew. It was so well-organized and interpreted! After that, we roamed around a bit more to see a few of the other permanent collections. There really is something for everyone at MFA-H. And the family membership was a great value!
The permanent collection and travelling shows are always worth a visit. Don't miss the James Turrell tunnel!
This museum is actually two buildings, adjoined in the basement floor. It is a really large museum, so it's hard to see everything in one visit. Planning to only be here once, I tried to hurry through and see everything as quickly as possible, but because it's so big it was not a great plan. If you're fairly local or plan to come to Houston again, I would suggest to see all the temporary exhibits and one area of the permanent ones. Then on your next visit, see the new temps and another area of the permanent ones.
this museum is a must for art lovers and is located in Houston's beautiful museum district. Located in an area where you can park and visit one after another.
What a great treat to go to the museum on Thursdays between 6-8pm for Happy Hour. They have live DJ, serve cocktails at cash bar, and entrance to museum is free on Thursdays! The cocktail specials were great, just $6 for a delicious drink with a good amount of liquor (not stingy at all). But you can also get wine for $5 or the house wine for $3. Outside are food trucks if you get hungry (we weren't so I can't speak to the food, but it smelled great from other patrons who brought it inside). Loved being able to enjoy a drink then walk around museum and talk about the fabulous art. Keep in mind you have to enjoy drink and food only in designated area, you can't carry around museum obviously. What a great time!
Love this museum and love how easy it is to get too and parking is a breeze. Recently visited to see the historical artifacts on loan from a museum in Kuwait. This museum never disappoints and has a Cafe Express that you can have a meal in as well. Do not think twice about visiting the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.
Beautiful collection of European and American fine art ( from 16 th century on)? Loved the small Dutch collection of paintings from 17 th century
What a treat for a Monet fan who just happened to be in Houston the second day before this exhibit closed. Most people associate Monet's artwork mainly with Haystacks & Waterlilies. This exhibit focused on 50 paintings along the Seine River. I loved the oil on canvas ice floes. The rainbow of colors are extraordinary, the dichotomy of the strength of the floes versus the calmness of the water is a visual masterpiece. The River was his outdoor studio, offering us glimpses of life passing through his eyes, as he ages. His ability to take one subject & present it three different ways, is a delight and magical to behold. Thank you to MFA for this fantastic exhibit. If you have the opportunity please visit the MFA as they have so much to offer! We went early on a Sunday and parking was plentiful and the traffic was light. Cheers!
