this tour was an amazing one, my family especially kids loved it. we were happy to see they (And we as well) learned a lot. it has so much to take from
Since there were four of us, we bought a family membership for $95. We had a 14 year old and an 8 year old. We were able to throughly tour the energy, paleontology, chemistry, weather, and Earth exhibits before the kids got bored (about 2 hours). My husband took our son to the McDonald's (only restaurant there) while my daughter and I paid $12 each ($25 for non members) to see the samurai exhibit. The samurai exhibit was nice with numerous swords, helmets, and armor as well as information covering the samurai class and construction of swords and armor. We would have gone to the planetarium and IMAX but we didn't realize you need to buy the tickets at the box office for everything but the samurai exhibit. The ticket seller wasn't clear on that subject. So get all your tickets at the start because the lines are long.My son enjoyed the energy and paleontology exhibits the most. My daughter enjoyed the chemistry and samurai exhibits the most. We took in the mineralogy on the 2nd floor and some of the third floor American and Egyptian exhibits briefly. If you are a family of four, get the $95 membership. The discount on shows and special exhibits makes up the difference in cost. We would have paid $65 for entry and $50 for the samurai. Had we managed any shows, we'd have made up the money the same day. As it was we paid $4 more total. We did probably save that money with our 10% discount, however. The quality of the exhibits is high especially the dinosaurs with several T-Rex's, and a hominids display that had my son's rapt attention. My teenaged daughter was fascinated by the displays on elements as she is studying earth science in school. Many interactive displays for young kids, but also plenty of good information to read on the displays. The gift store isn't the typical toys for kids tourist trap. They have some nice jewelry, polished rocks, several books aimed at babies through adults, and a large variety of pithy geek t-shirts.Overall, the regular prices are high, but the membership prices (especially if you repeat visit) are a good bargain.I hope we will get to visit again (we are a three hour drive from Houston).
I took a friend that was visiting and we really enjoyed it. When on a Thursday when it is free. The Dinosaurs are so amazing they have so many
My boyfriend and I went during a trip to Houston and we were amazed at how much the museum had to offer. It was interesting and very interactive. I would definitely recommend it.
We spent about 2 hours at the HMNS and just touched the surface. I can't wait to go back and see more. What an amazing museum. I grew up and spent a lot of adult time at the AMNH in NYC and the HMNS dinosaur exhibit is SOOOO much better! Everything is presented so beautifully and chronologically. They even have 2 T-Rexes. When a guide says it's better than Chicago (even though Chicago has Sue), don't argue - or you'll get an earful about why their T-Rex is better and more complete. I believe them. What was particularly great is that they have the skeletons arranged and a corresponding lit picture of how the dinosaurs or animals would look in the scene. The megafauna exhibited was great - imagine a sloth the size of a bear.As other people have mentioned - why is McDonald's the only food option? My kids have never eaten McDonald's, why would I start in a world class SCIENCE museum? I would have stayed longer if there had been more food optionsOh - not advertised, but the AAA discount is very good and permits you to go in the member/corporate line.
I know we have all been pulled through museums by our parents. Trust me when i say this will not be the case here. The exhibits are amazing (Weiss) , vibrant, and well-mapped. The tour guides are entertaining and very knowledgeable, and the price is extremely reasonable. My 10 year old nephew wanted to stay longer and there is easily a full day of walking to do. Take your time and split up the visits. I purchased a membership - very worth it!!
We have passes and go fairly regular and its nice to have a place that everyone looks forward to going to.
I've been to HMNS dozens of times... and I love going back! The Cockrell Butterfly Center, dinosaur exhibits, Egypt Exhibit, Animal Exhibit, Gemstone Exhibit, and Native American Exhibit, among several others, are all great. There are so many things to see that you'll never want to leave! There is a McDonalds inside, but that's your only food option once you're inside the museum. If you haven't used the tickets for your exhibit yet, feel free to go outside and grab a bite to eat, and return later. It's a great museum with a huge IMAX theater, and the exhibits and movies are always changing. I would DEFINITELY recommend this to anyone of any age!
We attended the Magna Carta exhibit with our teen niece (who desperately wanted to see it) and her brother. The museum has so many great permanent exhibits and they bring in awesome, well-interpreted special exhibits as well. We could spend many days there without getting bored! The dino exhibit and the gem collection were especially big hits with both adults and teens.
Went to the HMNS with a large group and was able to utilize the member discount because a couple people in our group have a museum membership; we saved $13/pp that way which is a big savings. There are a lot of exhibits to view for the entrance price. Particularly enjoyed the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit. Only food available is a McDonald's at the entrance. Wished there was a cafe with healthier options.Parking can be difficult and the garage parking cost $10. Not quite the same as NYC but pretty good for H-town. A good attraction for a rainy day.
I was very impressed! There was so much there, so much for everyone to see. I went to the awesome Cockrell Butterfly Center, starting with a lot of information and little exhibits on other insects and then on to the conservatory with SO MANY butterflies. The other exhibit that I was truly impressed with was the one on oil. A great place to have this, I learned so much about how it's developed, extracted, and converted to energy and other products. The dinosaur exhibit was quite impressive too. There were many other exhibits but only had 2-3 hours to peruse.
It would've been perfect if the tickets were not so expensive. I went to the Planetarium because I enjoy the presentations especially with the special effects.
