Museum is at the Fairgrounds, easy to find. The lady at the entrance was very nice. The museum is small. We thought the displays gave us a real view of what the old west was like, lots of cowboy stuff.
It would be worth the stop and visit this museum. It's located in the fair grounds in Douglas, just off one of the main roads. It's got all kinds of cool and interesting facts and items. It's got several rooms and two floors. The ladies that were working when we visited were very friendly and informative. The best thing is there is no cost. It's definitely worth the stop. They also have a gift shop with all kinds of neat stuff.
We didn't want to leave Wyoming without seeing a Jackalope and getting our picture with it. Okay, it was a huge one outside the museum(made out of plaster). We walked in some of the trains in the area and the two people we met working there were so friendly and informative about the History around the area.
This museum is located on the grounds of the Wyoming State Fair right in Douglas. It's really a must see if in the area. An impressive collection of artifacts fill many rooms in an expansive, clean and well-lit building. Even if you aren't a history buff, you will be impressed by the sheer amount and variety of the collection, encompassing the entirety of Wyoming, Western, and Native American culture over the century. Just a treasure waiting to be seen, but allow enough time - at least a couple of hours.
The Douglas Museum is easy to find. It is close to the Fair grounds. There are multiplerooms with different themes such as ranch/cowboy, Indians, women and children clothing. It islayed out nicely and very clean. It contains a nice collection of local Wy Western antiques. It's a must for those who like western history. Set a side enough time to go through it to see it all.We enoyed it very much.
I really did not want to go to another pioneer museum, as we have seen so many, but it was something to do. What a pleasant surprise! Museum is very extensive and covers many aspects of Wyoming history in a clear, well organized manor. It was much bigger than we thought and we could have allotted more time. Very clean and neat. the gun collection is great. It covered everything from the range wars to period dress from the early 1900's to the fifties, some of the Spanish American war, the POW camp here in town from WWII, along with a lot of artwork by the POWs. Many local artists display, antique toys, appliances of all genres, way too many catagories to mention. We were very impressed. Free admition, great family place.
I thought we would be in and out, but two hours felt like we rushing it a bit. This museum was an interesting contrast to the Buffalo Bill Museum up in Cody a few day ago. The Cody is extremely well funded, excellent and super slick, this one is home made and a bit funky and chock full of every imaginable gun, dish, appliance, dress, tool, ect, ect. Just leave enough time and bring a sweater, I would have stayed longer but I got a little chilled.
A must see as far as we are concerned! Well worth the time it takes to go around the whole thing. Do not miss this historical attraction as it has items of interest for every person in the family!
This little museum has big attractions. There is a lot to see and learn. The museum is free, the staff is friendly and helpful. Always something new to see.
Great place with lot's of history for a small musium went here during state fair and it was quite busy but we got to see a few things I would recomend to history buff's !
From all sorts of early guns to the original teepee from Dances with Wolves it seems like they have everything here. 2 or 3 floors with a half of dozen rooms full of unique items that I have never seen before I will visit this place again
I've been a few times and still have not seen the whole museum. Always look forward to going back. Many different aspects of Wyoming history and life in Wyoming in the early years are covered by displays.
I joined trip advisor in order to write a review of this museum. My fiancé, my nine year old son and myself were traveling through Douglas on our way to Casper from Denver. We stopped in Douglas to stretch our legs, and on our way back out if town drove by the Pioneer museum. We pulled in not expecting much at all, most likely another small town museum with a very limited collection of semi interesting local pieces. As we entered the door we glanced at the clock, 4:28, so with the posted closing time of 5:00, we figured we probably had enough time to buzz through this little museum twice before they closed. We were met but the delightful lady that staffed the museum, chatted a bit then entered. The first thing that struck me was no fee, it was free, OK, not unusual for small town museums. As soon as we entered the first room our jaws dropped. It was enormous, the first case was filled with probably thirty antique old west rifles. There was another case next to it. I could write forever about what they have. Wyoming memorabilia, militaria, WW2, Native American artifacts, a tipi..... It was awesome. By far the best free museum I have EVER been to. There was a total of about 8 rooms packed full of unending interesting items. My only regret is we didn't have four hours to spend in the place. We will be stoping on our way home though. Very, very interesting and well put together museum. If you find yourself in Douglas be sure to stop.
This place has something for everyone! We spent 3-4 hours enjoying all of the exhibits and still need more time. Kids are older so loved reading about all of the artifacts.
Well-marked and easy to find. Has a wide range of items of historical interest but some displays need a narrative to explain why they're of interest. Excellent photographic display of the history of the state fair.
