Did this adventure with my wife on February 1, 2015. We were picked up at our hotel in Jackson, then driven about 45 minutes to the Togwotee Mountain Lodge where we met up with the dog sled team. First, my wife had to pet every dog. Then we climbed into the sled as a tandem as our musher took us out with a 12 dog team. . Our musher, Elliot was in the Iditarod last year, so, of course, he really knew what he was doing. It is so quiet when the dogs are running! I wasn't expecting that; it was amazing the way we could carry on a conversation with Elliot the whole time.We went out about 12 miles, enjoying views of the Tetons. Then Elliot offered us a chance to be the musher, which I enjoyed doing, but my wife declined. My regret - I should have insisted my wife do this too, it is a unique and fun experience. Back at the lodge, my wife had to pet every dog again. Highly recommend this to anyone who can do it.
A great half day dog sled ride with knowledgable crew. Husband and I shared same sled and rode in the sled for first half the trip. We stopped at an overlook to see an awe inspiring view of Tetons. Second half we got to drive and mush with dogs. Fun! Come prepared with warm clothes. Need jacket, ski wind pants if possible and boots. We enjoyed a nice 40 degree day. We even had Ididerod dogs in our pack. Dogs love what they do and it shows. We booked through our hotel and lunch was included.
If you are in Jackson Hole , Wyoming in the winter months, you have to try dog sledding ! We were set up with this company through our hotel, The Rustic Inn. Picked up promptly at our hotel and transported to their headquarters at the Tawgahtee Lodge. Our musher was Chad, Avery nice young man that gave us a half day tour in the back country of the Forrest. A fresh snow had fallen yesterday, and the views were incredible ! Chad was very knowledgeable about all,of his dogs and the area, I would highly recommend anyone, adults, kids, teenagers go on this tour. I am sure they will never forget it. Will also post some pictures, great folks to deal with !
I am torn on this review. I did have a great experience but considering how expensive it is for what it entails I wouldn't recommend it to my friends. I was able to not only ride in but allowed to drive my sled and when I fell off I did not let go!!! My guide was very generous with her praise "You are the only guest I have ever seen hold on!" ;)The pups are amazing and warmed my heart. It is extremely cold however. If you decide to try this make sure to wear extremely warm shoes/socks and head gear/wind breaking items. The sleds will tip over occassionally so be prepared.
This really was the highlight of our week in Wyoming. We found our way to this experience from our hotel concierge. We made the drive ourselves to the location which was a little over an hour's drive from Teton Village. Once there, we had the opportunity to tour the facility and meet the dogs that would be pulling our sled. I will note, that being a dog lover and being accustomed to keeping my dogs in the house and sometimes on the bed with me, it was a little hard to see the housing for the dogs. But, as we became aware that these dogs have to remain outside so that can build tolerance and thick coats for survival, we were able to enjoy the experience. And it really was an amazing experience. We went along several trails and our guide was really knowledgeable about the area. There was a mixture of moments that ranged from being pulled at fast speeds around curves and becoming airborne after going over large bumps, to quiet and serene moments as you were pulled through the woods. There was a light snowfall throughout the experience which really made it magical. Midway we stopped and had hot chocolate and had opportunities at driving the sled. We did dress in lots of layers and there were also blankets available. We went into this experience feeling excited, and came out of it feeling exuberant. It really is an experience to have once in your lifetime. We definitely plan to do this again.
The dog sled tour was fantastic, amazing--there aren't enough words to describe how much fun it was. We went with a tour group to Yellowstone/Jackson Hole, and all of us who did the dog sled adventure had the same reaction--it was the highlight of our trip. After getting acquainted with all the dogs, and getting lots of "doggy hugs" while our musher hitched up the 13 who were to pull our sled, we were off. Our musher gave us a choice of types of trails, and my friend and I both said we didn't want any "wimpy" ride--we wanted the dog sled to the max, and he didn't try to talk us out of it. (BTW, we are both women in our mid-60's). It was great!!! Yes, it would be considered somewhat "rough" rather than just "bumpy" but the combination of going airborne, interspersed with smooth straightaways and spectacular curves was an experience I wouldn't trade for anything. We stopped several times along the way for the dogs to rest (and roll in the snow), but it was only moments before they were barking to go again. At one of our stops, we could see the long stretch of the Grand Tetons. On the way back, when the trail smoothed out, he let us take turns helping mush, instructing us on when and how to lean to keep from going into a snowbank. Again, it was great. I would highly recommend the Continental Divide Dog Sled Adventure. (I would also recommend that you ask your musher about the trails, prior to getting into the sled,so that you can decide which one will work better for you).
