This is a favorite place to see wildlife, especially moose, bison, birds, and coyotes. One can also sometimes see elk, deer, wolves, and pronghorn. There is a nice loop from Kelly to Moose, open in the summer and fall.
Went with Brush Buck Guides. Saw a Pronghorn doe defend her calf from a coyote. Great views of the Tetons.
We really enjoyed our visit out to the flats - abandoned houses, buffalo (bison to us limeys!) wandering free, the Tetons in the background and of course THAT barn. Tip - do NOT get close to the buffalo -the warnings don't lie and we saw people (and their children, believe it or not!) ridiculously close. These photos were with a telephoto lens !
This was a good drive for those who want to see animals while staying safe in a car. We saw deer, bison, and a bald eagle. There were plenty of stops along the way and I was able to dash out of the car to take some wildlife photos. Keep in mind, that the animals are dangerous so my ill-conceived dashes were not in the best interest of my own health and safety.
Take your time and dress warm. It can be chilly out on the flats. All times of day are great but evening will give you best sunsets.
We saw a lot of Buffalo and really enjoyed Mormon Row. Great info on the Mormons settling in that area.
We ended up going through Antelope Flats several times during our week long stay in the Jackson area. We could always count on seeing herds of bison and lots of pronghorn. We had our closest encounters with the bison on these roads including having bison cross in front of our car. If you are back this way, consider going up the Gros Ventre road as well - very interesting, a little off the beaten path with some interesting history. Nice campground towards the end of the paved section, on a naturally dammed lake, that proved to be an excellent lunch setting for us one day.
Just a short drive from Jackson, this area is a must for wildlife photographers. We saw several groups of pronghorn, a large herd of bison, bald eagles and, from the highway nearby, a bull moose, all in broad daylight with the Grand Tetons as a backdrop. Viewing varies by the season. When we returned later in the month, most bison were gone. The pronghorn were still there.
It was interesting going down this road to find the remnants of the Mormon Row settlement from the late 19th -early 20th century in the area. The Moulton Barn, originally belonging to one of the Mormon families who settled in the area, has become an iconic symbol of the settlers and of the Teton mountain range, which is its backdrop. Worth a visit, and bring a camera!
We enjoyed seeing all of the buffalo and antelope along this stretch of the highway through the Grand Teton National Park. Go down this road to get to Mormon Row for the quintessential picture of the Teton Range (do not try to drive in from the Gros Ventre Junction road...very rough, dirt road).
Good view of the Grand Teton with the houses along Mormon Row. Possible chance to see wildlife along the road.
This is a great place to see antelope. They are beautiful and it's pretty close to Jackson. We saw several separate groups of antelope.
Great place to see animals and spectacular scenery. A lot of history with Mormon Row and the Moulton Barn and Tetons as a backdrop.
Get to Mormon row when the morning light is on the Tetons. Then you can head east on Antelope Road. This takes you into some vast sagebrush flats. There is another prospective for photographing the Tetons and you are likely to encounter grazing Bison.
You should easily be able to spot antelope and bison here almost any time of day. Mormon Row often has bison right next to the dirt road. The Antelope are a little harder to spot, but if drive through you should see some (we have seen over 20 many times). In the evening you may also see a few mule deer along the edges. Overall, a cool place to take new visitors or children with almost a guarantee of wildlife.
